The Youngstown State women's golf team was one of 18 schools selected to participate in the NCAA Regional hosted by Notre Dame at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The NCAA selection show aired on Monday night and the Penguins will hit the links May 7-9.
Overall 72 teams will be in action at four regional sites across the country and each will play 54 holes. It will be the first appearance in the tournament by YSU. The top six teams and three individuals advance to the NCAA Championships which are May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla. Duke is the defending National Champion.
The Penguins will compete against Arizona, Duke, Oklahoma State, Wake Forest, UC Davis, Pepperdine, Tulane, Notre Dame, Purdue, Kent State, Louisville, San Jose State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Harvard, Troy and Eastern Kentucky in the regional.
Earning automatic bids in the regional were Arizona, UC Davis, Pepperdine, Kent State, Harvard, Troy. Eastern Kentucky and the Penguins.
The Guins advanced to the NCAA Regional for the first time in school history by virtue of winning the Horizon League Championship on Sunday. It was the school's third title, but first since the league received an automatic NCAA bid in 2010.
Tee times for the teams will be announced on Wednesday.
