With 39 days remaining until the 2015-16 season opener, the Youngstown State women's basketball team held its first official practice on Monday morning at Beeghly Center.
The team practiced as a whole for about two hours and had individual time for player development beforehand. The full-team session focused primarily on fundamentals, including ball-handling drills, post entry work, free throws and closeouts to name a few.
"It's always good to see our energy on the first official day of practice," YSU third-year head coach John Barnes said. "We saw some players step up, make plays and be leaders, and that was good to see. Like all teams at this time of year we have plenty to work on, and we have 29 more practices to get that accomplished."
The Penguins are coming off a season in which they won at least 20 games and earned a spot in the Women's NIT for the second time in three years. There are three starters and eight letterwinners back from the 2014-15 team, and four talented freshmen have joined the program.
Youngstown State's season begins at Beeghly Center on Nov. 13 against Canisius. For season ticket information, call (330) 941-1YSU.
