Yes Cigmetti expected to announce today, but othersare saying it will be January 2. YSU should just reach out and offer him $175k, or $125k-$150k and a long-term contract, but we will not be able to match JMU. Now we have to play him. Hard to believe that Charlotte would take Atkins over coach Shane. I never saw Atkins as a "up & commer", but that is what they are saying.

Agree, I still don’t think Monty is a good OC, I don’t care if Notre Dame hires him tomorrow.

...and YSU is what ..."Big Time"? You must be one of those people that thinks we could get a real coach from the Big-10 as a head coach as well? Coach Shane (the man who once continuously set records at YSU) is one of the top OC's in the game and he is going to one of, if not the top, program in the nation. You know Mike Houston is going to E. Carolina, he is not replacing Urban Myer.

I am aware that Montgomery cannot go to a conference rival, at least not for a few more years. I am assuming that both clubs (YSU & JMU) will make the post-season. Or maybe schedule each other.

Continuously set records vs teams like Butler and Valpo and shrank and could barely put up points in the biggest games.

Crist is just inept. His offense doesn't even have an identity.

Not true. You just think that we should put up basketball numbers in every game. You know there are teams as good as YSU out there LOL. Monty seldom failed to put up enough numbers to win any game. (aside from money games & NDSU). Besides when we do start playing SEC-ball (aside from Alabama) or even worse Big-12 ball, my days as a fan will dwindle. You guys love to watch NDSU, a complete clone of old YSU, as they chew up championship after championship. Yet they have a defense that shuts people down. So did we once. Here are some of Monty's base records (over entire season):
1. First downs over a season
2. Rushing yards over a season
3. Number of completions over a season
4. Completion percentage over a season
5. Completion yards. over a season
6. Fewest INT's over a season
7. Total offensive plays per season
8. Total offensive yards per season
9. Total average yards offense (per game) per season (3 of the top 5). Yet, 4 of the top 5 opposition average yards per game (per year) were while coach Shane was our OC. So try pointing the blame at the defense once in a while where it has belonged.
10. Scoring for the season: #1 in passing and #2 in rushing.
11. Highest season-average points per game. I would be willing to bet he is #1 over his YSU career as well, but that is too much calculating.

Just send $20 to YSU for a media guide, it has all of these numbers.

BTW: Montgomery's predecessors played the same I-AA Non or partial scholarship schools. Or else they played the bottom of the conference PSAC schools. Coach Shane still holds the records.

Those numbers are great but he managed to develop 0 qbs, ran an offense that constantly injured said underdeveloped qbs and only made the playoffs once.

Again not true statements & make no sense. He Developed several QBs. Hess and Wells were 7 of Monty's 8-years here. These are two of the greatest QB's in school history. You also forget that both Bo and Wolf chased away good QBs. He had under-developed QBs 1 season (out of what? 8 ) and half of that came because we lost #1 and #2 at the same time...the other half was Bo trying to take over the offense. Monty worked with ALL of his Qb's #1 - #4, which is why we had success during those lean games. He ran and excellent offensive scheme that allowed us to insert QB and RB to fit our play calling and our skill-set...something you never see at our (FCS) level. We had our historically worst defenses in program history while he was here and you blame the OC for our lack of success? That comment is reserved for the poor DC's and the HC's (Wolf and Bo) which failed to take care of our DEFENSIVE coaching troubles. BTW: 2018 showed us Montgomery's skills. YSU had no right  to be in that final and coach Shane took our offense to the next level and (along with the same luck every team has) we made it to the final. Monty stood up to Bo to try and keep Wells, when Hunter was finishing classes to leave YSU. Just remember what QB got us to the final. Also remember what OC got us to the final w/o our #1 TB and 2 starting linemen.

https://jmusports.com/news/2018/12/28/montgomery-offensive-coordinator.aspx

Cignetti Tabs Shane Montgomery as JMU Football Offensive Coordinator

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison Head Coach Curt Cignetti has appointed Shane Montgomery as the program's new offensive coordinator. Montgomery brings 28 years of Division I coaching experience to JMU, including 12 years at the FBS level, four of which he spent as a head coach.

"Shane has a wealth of experience; philosophically, we're aligned in terms of what I believe is important – to have a total team plan and winning football games," Cignetti said. He's adjusted his offense over the years according to his personnel. He's coached in a national championship game, has beaten North Dakota State, as well as FBS teams, and has been a head coach in the Mid-American Conference. He has a great reputation in the profession and is a great fit for us at JMU."

Most recently, he was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this past season at Charlotte. The 49ers won five games in 2018, which was a program-record at the FBS level. They also finished .500 in Conference USA play for the first time, going 4-4 in league games.

Prior to his brief stint with the 49ers, Montgomery led the offense for eight seasons (2010-17) at Youngstown State, coaching the top quarterback some of the best running backs in school history. In each of his eight seasons, YSU threw and rushed for over 2,000 yards. The Penguins achieved the program's top-four outputs of total offense during his tenure (2011, 2016, 2010, 2017) while Montgomery called the plays.

Montgomery helped four-year starter Kurt Hess rewrite the YSU record books during his first four seasons as offensive coordinator. Hess finished his career as the school's all-time leader in completions (706), attempts (1,135), yards (8,925), touchdown passes (75), yards per game (198.4), 200-yard passing games (24), passer rating (144.96), touchdown responsibility (87), four-touchdown passing games (six), total offensive yards (9,459) and total offense per game (210.2).

He was part of YSU's run to the national championship in 2016, which included playoff victories against Samford, at Jacksonville State, versus Wofford and at Eastern Washington before falling to JMU in the title game. That season ended a 10-year playoff drought for the Penguins.

Before his run in Youngstown, Montgomery spent one season as offensive coordinator at Akron (2009) and eight years at Miami (OH), serving as offensive coordinator (2001-04) and head coach (2005-08). He also led the offensive during his four years at the helm. While at Miami, Montgomery mentored two-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who set 21 program records in three seasons before being the 11th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. Roethlisberger threw for over 10,000 yards and 80 touchdowns in his three-year collegiate career.

Montgomery also had stops as an assistant at Chattanooga (1993-00) and at NC State (1991-92) where he was a quarterback from 1986-89. He was a three-year starter and led the Wolfpack to two bowl berths, earning Offensive MVP honors at the 1988 Peach Bowl and 1989 Copper Bowl. He was a Second Team All-ACC selection in 1989 and finished his career with over 5,000 passing yards and 31 touchdowns.
