Youngstown State senior Alison Smolinski has been named the Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season, the conference office announced on Monday.
Smolinski is the Horizon League Player of the Week for the second time this season, and this marks the sixth week that a Penguin has won the award. Smolinski, YSU teammate Mary Dunn and IUPUI's Macee Williams are the only repeat winners.
Smolinski scored a game-high 19 points while making five 3-pointers in YSU's 74-61 win at Cleveland State on Saturday. The North Royalton, Ohio, native scored 13 points in the first quarter and made four of those 3s in the first 12 minutes to help the Penguins build a lead that they would never lose. The win allowed YSU to secure the third seed in this week's 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship.
Smolinski increased her 3-pointers total in 2018-19 to 96, which is the second-most for a season in Horizon League history. Smolinski is just make one shy of Senee Shearer's record of 97 that was set in 2013-14.
Smolinski and the Penguins will host Milwaukee in the quarterfinals of Motor City Madness at Beeghly Center this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
