Indianapolis, Ind. - Youngstown State freshman Victoria Grans has been named the Nike Horizon League Women's Golfer of the Week for the period of March 13-19, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Grans earned medalist honors to lead YSU to a second-place finish at the Savannah State Spring Invitational at Crosswinds Golf Club in Savannah, Ga., on Thursday, March 14. She shot an even-par 72 at the one-day event to earn medalist honors for the first time in her career. It was the freshman's fourth top-10 finish of the season, and her third in the top five.
Grans' even-par 72 featured five birdies and nine pars. After carding a double bogey and two bogeys over her first three holes, she birdied or pared 14 consecutive holes from No. 4 to No. 17. The Stockholm, Sweden, native also became one of eight golfers in program history to have at least two rounds of par or better in a season. She also shot a 2-under-par 70 in her first collegiate round at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational during the fall.
Grans is the second Penguin to earn Golfer of the Week honors this spring; Katlyn Shutt previously earned the award for the period of Feb. 20-26. YSU has won two of the four weekly honors that have been awarded, and the other two have gone to Oakland's Veronica Haque.
Youngstown State will return to competition April 7-8 for the Indiana State University Invitational at the Country Club of Terre Haute in Terre Haute, Ind.
