NKU's MBB HC Brannen to Cincinnati
« on: April 15, 2019, 02:29:59 PM »
Northern Kentucky coach John Brannen has taken the job at Cincinnati.  I remember at some point this season during a press conference, Coach Calhoun said we need to get Brannen out of this league- meaning he deserved a shot a high major job.

Will be interesting now if anyone transfers out.  They had everyone returning other than Drew McDonald.

Do you think Calhoun would go to NKU?

Not sure NKU would go after him.  Not that he wouldn't be  a good candidate.   It does pay 300k compared to 200k however if coach Calhoun can have the the championship seasons like Brannen did I'm sure he will be compensated.

It seems to me that NKU is a "brand" of basketball. Kind of like YSU used to be in football. I do not feel this will be appealing to Calhoun, as he is really trying to keep his own brand.

You always lose me with your esoteric ramblings like this.  I don't get any of your NKU "brand" or "Calhoun" brand.  Calhoun is committed to YSU UNTIL he wins.  When he gets YSU to the Horizon Championship and the "big dance", he'll be gone, and not to NKU but at lease a upper mid-major which is how I describe Cinn.

NKU has only been a D1 school in basketball for the last 7 years.  They were 42-75 in their first 4 years.   Brannen definitely turned their program around the last 3 years going 72-29.

I couldn't imagine Calhoun going there.

I think this will be a telling year for YSU.  There was some improvement this year, certainly the 6 game win streak brought excitement, but I think anything less than .500 record & not in top 4 of the league would be a disappointment with what we have coming back & where the rest of the league is.

I agree 100%.  These are pretty much Calhoun recruits and we definitely showed significant improvement last season.  "MUST" get to winning season and competitive at the top of the Horizon league or recruiting and fan base will be quick to turn.

Go, I am simply saying that each coach preaches completely different styles of ball. In this case, drastically different. The only way that Calhoun's 1970's/80's Bruin/Laker ball can be successful is at a program that is willing to give him time to put it in place. Which means a lower division team, or a struggling DI program like ours. NKU (on the other hand) is used to success. Prior to going DI, NKU was one of the nation's premier NCAA Division II programs. They have made the NCAA DI tourney twice in their 3-years of eligibility. This is the type of success that their fans expect.

Calhoun has already coached quite a number of games that are not his traditional style of ball; or at least the style that put him in the DII championship game. You can say that he is learning to adapt to his players, but he is recruiting them to play his own uptempo/all-offense style of ball.
