Vindicator folding and YSU effect ?
« on: June 29, 2019, 02:49:31 PM »
I live out of state and look to the vindy & Tribune for access for YSU stories.   Will something fill the vacuum now that the Vindicator is closing ?

I guess the Warren Tribune will have to do for now unless somebody else buys the Vindy with a new lower cost labor contract.
Tribune could also expand into covering the Mahoning county.

The Trib has done a much better job than the Vindicator covering YSU sports in recent years.  In the ‘70’s and ‘80’s, the Vindicator did a phenomenal job of covering all local sports, from sandlot to college,,,it’s a shame that this had to happen, but it was inevitable. Sadly, the local newspapers are a dying breed.

This is sad and I feel bad for the people that will lose their jobs.  It will also leave a gaping hole in local news coverage.  As others have noted, it will have a minimal impact on YSU since Vindicator coverage has been so embarrassingly poor.

Am I to understand that they are shutting down ALL operations? Not even going to be online only?  Someone surely will fill this void somehow.

Yes, robmat, they are shutting down the entire operation.  I agree that there is an opportunity for an entrepreneur to produce an online journal, perhaps twice weekly, that features local news, sports, and opinions about valley issues.  Figure no production costs and part-time contributors only that would work for a share of any profits.  The Vindicator costs $17.33 monthly for home delivery.  I would pay $10 for a quality online product.

The Tribune already prints the Ashtabula paper and I suspect a new "Mahoning Valley" edition is in the works.
I haven't been able to get my arms around the anti-YSU bias in the Vindicator for the last bunch of years. YSU is the best thing going in the valley and the formerly "main" paper in the valley chose to slight the school at every opportunity.  I know they are liberal and JT is NOT, but doesn't their bias predate JT's return?  Anyway, they didn't adapt, didn't adjust to their consumer's needs, and died.  It's the way of free enterprise.  They'll be more former valley residents who miss them that current residents.  I have a HS friend who lives in Reno NV who sends me the obits for passed acquaintances before I ever see them.  The out of towners are the ones who'll miss the info.

Ironically, because of their poor coverage of YSU sports and their liberal agenda, I finally cancelled my Vindy subscription last week, 3 days before their shut down announcement.
The saving was enough to pay for my YSU football season tickets.

Funny, the valley is about 80% or more democratic, but that's how they vote, it ISN'T how they think.  Listen to Ron Verb, they think pretty conservatively, but continue to vote the way they were instructed when young.  I don't get it, but the Vindy never got it either.  They continued to think because we voted for Ryan, we thought like Ryan and we clearly DON'T.  Ryan says the stock market rise under POTUS Trump is "meaningless".  Well, we'll still vote for such lunacy, but we certainly know it's what's going on is good for us!  Vindicator thought we all agreed with that liberal crap. And the bias against YSU is simply explainable.  Ed Puskas, and I wish him the best is all this, tried several times to explain it to me, but he never made any sense.  Sometimes he said it didn't exist, and I KNEW that was wrong.  Anyway, good luck to all the employees, but for me the Vindy won't be missed.

go guins and double et, those are terrible takes to have on a sports chat board. I suspect you take no issue with the president forcing generals to stand with him and the use of military equipment for a independence day celebration as well as the mistreatment of migrant children in internment camps.

Cjm, you are right. This is a sport board and I will not discuss this political issues with you. BTW, What part of my statements you consider to be terrible?

Before you lecture me about immigrants, I just want you to know that the facts. I am an legal immigrant coming to this country with few hundred $ in my pocket. I have lived under colonialism, communism, socialism and capitalism. I lived under places controlled dictators where we had no voting rights.

I am representing this great country of ours as chief of the US delegation to sit across the table from the French, German, British, Japan..... Oh, also China to protect the interests of our industry for the last 25 years.
I am also training our STEM students as a Full Professor at YSU.

So, please state your opinion next time instead of criticizing others as terrible.

Peace and bye

This is a sports board and let us keep that way. The closing of the Vindy is sad, but since I have lived out of the Youngstown area for 33 years I won't miss it. Double ET that was a great rebuttal and I am happy you are an American. Keep up the good job at YSU.

my criticism was my opinion of the ridiculous notion of the Vindy's "liberal agenda".

NO I don't. Forced according to CNN MSNBC or FOX?  Generals stand by the Commander In Chief or quit, that's the only 2 options for a military leader.
We have used military equipment for ever in parades etc.  We fly over air shows, ball games etc. and I see Americans applaud EVERY TIME!  They are applauding an jet doing a fly by at 300 knots at 4000' in the air.  You have to be enthusiastic to do applaud somebody who couldn't possibly hear you.  And I don't want it stopped!
I have seen NO evidence of mistreatment in the camps, other than the early pictures of cages which turned out to be from the OBAMA administration!
I know there were haters out there nice to share with you.
