Duquesne Week
« on: September 10, 2019, 08:12:27 AM »
Duquesne is no slouch this week. They have 16 D1 transfers on the team.

Syracuse, Penn State 2x, Ohio State, Illinois 2x, Rutgers, Eastern Michigan, Duke, NC State, UCF, FAU, BG, Maryland, Boise St, Pitt.

If YSU takes them lightly, this could easily be a loss. QB play will be big in this game.

This game should not be taken lightly. They knocked off #16 in the playoffs last year and have significant talent. They are looking for a top 25 ranking and have more votes than us.

QB play is definitely important, but from a "3 aspects of the game" prospective, our kicking game was absolutely record setting terrible.  we punted for twice our rush carry average!?!?! 22 yds per punt, 11 yards per carry!   I've never heard of that!  When you add in the 2 missed PATs it was a BAD day for special teams.
Cleaning up the penalties big issue too.  People asking what was wrong with Baker Mayfield Sunday.  Well 1st and 25 puts additional pressure on QB.  Doesn't matter much with bad efence (no D) like Howard, but sure will against better teams.  IMO, Bo has his hands full this week.

instead of punting throw a long pass that can be intercepted.  same as a punt as long as it is more than 22 yards

Good plan! (what if DB drops the pass?) Truth is DeSalvo is much better tan 22 yards per kick.  Don't know the issue, but it wasn't weather!  If injury, we must have a back up that is good for more than 22 yards!  This issue is he punted 4 times and his long was 31.  Something is/was wrong.  I'm sure the shortcoming was noted by the coaching staff, and something will be done.

Wasn't May's a punter in HS? Let him punt. What do we have to lose?

Hopefully he'll need a starting job too.  As a senior, he deserves to lead one of the 3 phases of the game!
BTW, we do list Ryan Teminsky out of Canfield as a punter on the roster, if DeSalvo is injured.

Let's see what happened as DeSalvo went for 43 average the week prior. Gonya can punt if he is healthy. Also we have That kid from Canfield that can kick for 4-game if he has to.

I agree.  It's concerning to average 43 then 22 on 4 kicks with a long of 31 in good weather.  That's 4 bad kicks in a row which seems more likely injury than a bad case of the "shanks".  Coaching staff will sort it out.  If we lose to the Dukes it won't be punting that caused it!

Thanks for making this thread chief. Eager for this week. Hoping the guins clean it up and come out with a convincing win.

Dont be surprised by a closer than expected win. If we sleep walk it will not end well

If we don't correct the may errors (punting, penalties & etc.) committed in the Howard game; this could be like the Butler fiasco. Duquesne will be up for this game and we must be prepared physically and mentality. We must get out in front right at the get go!

This game is predicted to be close; but if we learned from the Howard game, we should win by 3 plus touchdowns.

One of the betting sites show Duquesne having a 48% chance to win
