The Youngstown State men's tennis clinched a share of its first-ever Horizon League regular-season title with a 6-1 win over UIC on Saturday at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Penguins improve to 12-8 overall and are unbeaten in league play at 7-0. UIC falls to 3-18 and 1-6 on the campaign. YSU's last conference championship came on the Division II level when it won the Mid-Con title back in 1980.
YSU picked up a the singles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. At No. 1, Harry Fouzas and Laurentiu Mandocescu earned a 6-2 win to clinch it for YSU after Will Everett and Nathan Favier won 6-2 at No. 2.
In singles, YSU won five of the six matches in straight sets.
At No. 1, Mandocescu earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Gustavo Schwebel. At No. 2, Fouzas beat Pelle Strandberg by a score of 6-2, 6-3. At No. 3, Clement Mainguy earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Anthony Nguyen. Favier picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kevin Kruzel. At No. 6, David Alvarez Moreno remained unbeaten in league matches with a 7-5, 6-2 score.
YSU concludes the regular season at Cleveland State next Saturday.
