Men's basketball vs Canisius
« on: November 07, 2022, 05:50:05 PM »
I'm thinking the four transfers and Cohill will start.  McBride most likely to run the point.   A lot of talk about the chemistry but this will not only be a YSU problem since most programs  are experiencing turnover because of the portal.   Limit turnovers, win the 50-50 balls and win the rebounding is a good recipe for a road win.

YSU is a 3.5 point favorite.  Actually thought it would be more than that.  YSU handled them last year at home and they are predicted for last in the MAAC in the preseason coaches poll.

Will be interesting how Coach Calhoun handles the lineups in their non-conference games.

If it is true that our defense struggled in the scrimmages, then that may be the reason why. With a lot of transfers/new faces, even if on paper we look strong, they will take some time to gel and understand everyone's strengths and weaknesses. Hoping for the W tonight!

WOW what a run to end the half...33-3 and held Canisius without a FG the last 9:05!  Crazy to think YSU gave up 32 points in the first 11 mins then it was like a different game.

We are up by 23 now with about 9 minutes to play.   I wonder if we can get to 100.

Obviously the 33-3 run to end the first half decided the game and YSU looked like they were playing against a weak D3 school, but the first 11 mins and most of the second half Canisius outplayed YSU.  I think YSU lost its intensity there in the 2nd half when they had built the lead to 25.

Way too many turnovers by YSU...20 to be exact.

I thought Green and Nelson were men amongst boys.  Nelson still missed a few point blank shots.

Covington looked a bit rusty and didn't get a lot of PT outside starting both halfs.

Rush looked really smooth, and Lovelace looks impressive for a freshman.

Owens still struggles when he has the ball and struggles to finish.

Little surprised Dunn only played 2 mins.

2nd half Canisius played with intensity and YSU sort of went on cruise control.  Final score not indicative of what was a route.
The good.
1. Liked both bigs Green & Nelson both on the glass and scoring inside which is something YSU hasn't had for ever.
2. Cohill was Cohill.  Scores at ease.
3. Brandon Rush was really impressive scoring the basket whether on deep shots or drives.
4. Frosh John Lovelace came in to play D on Canisius' guard who was hot and thought Lovelace's length and decent lateral movement slowed him down.  He showed some offense also.
5. Props to Raythan Mayes coming off the bench after being a 2 year starter.  Thought he looked good except for late in the game.
6. Glad to see Covington back after a year form basketball.  Looked like he might be on a pitch count.

When was the last time we saw YSU up by 23 on the road ?
