YSU - Westminster MBB
« on: December 18, 2023, 12:39:04 PM »
Thankfully it's the last of the 4 games against non D1's; however, this is one I do think is good to play annually.  Westminster is close and generally brings people, and much of their roster is always local kids.  Looking at their roster this year, the furthest away is one from Columbus, one from Pittsburgh, one from Akron, and one from Strongsville, while the other 13 are all from Youngstown area.  Plus generally they have a pretty good basketball team.

Westminster is 6-5, but have won 4 of the last 5.

YSU hasn't played very good against any of the 3 non D1's thus far.  They only beat NAIA Ohio Christian by 28 giving up 71.  The Lake Erie game was tied at halftime.  They were only up 15 on Bethany at halftime until playing a little better in the 2nd half, but still gave up 70.

For the 2nd straight year, YSU scores 117 against Westminster and back to back years with the biggest victory margin in the series.  The 72-point win margin is 4th best in school history.  This was clearly the best performance of the year against a non D1.  The guys were locked in, made good decisions, shot the ball well, and played good defense.  Coach said they had a couple good days of practice.

Nice to see EJ Farmer have back to back good games after struggling for much of the season.  Jaylen Bates and DJ Burns shot the ball very well.  Both of them have good range on their shots and impresses me how well they can shoot from 3.

Still keep waiting for Rush to break out of his 3 point shooting slump, outside of the Ohio Christian and Dayton games he's been off this year.

YSU has now won 6 straight games.  They've done that 2 other times in Calhoun's era.  Chance to go for 7 straight on Thursday against Navy. Looks like the last time YSU won 7 straight was the 1997-1998 year.
