YSU at Wright State - Saturday 3 p.m.
« on: December 02, 2011, 11:48:00 AM »
Wright State will bring a 2-5 overall record in to the game, 0-1 in the Horizon League, losing to Cleveland State last night 45-43 on a tip-in with less than a second left.

Wright State has home wins over Kenyon (80-56) and Jackson State (56-39).

In addition to CSU, losses have been at Ohio State (73-42), in Tampa to Florida (78-65), at North Florida (69-52) and home to Charlotte (70-66).

Sagarin ratings:

YSU 156
Wright State 216

Using the overall Sagarin ratings, including the home court edge for WSU, YSU would be a 1.5 point favorite.

Using Sagarin's Predictor ratings, including home court, Wright State would be a 5.5 point favorite.

In Sagarin's ratings, Predictor includes margin of victory, ELO Chess does not.  YSU's ranking in ELO Chess considers their 5-1 record heavily.  Predictor discounts close wins against lower ranked teams.

Ken Pomeroy's system gives YSU a 35% chance of victory, predicitng a 64-60 Wright State win.

Wright State is very young.  11 freshmen and sophomores on the roster per the website.  One of the juniors is a transfer from NC State playing his first year for the Raiders.  This is probably going to be one of our best shots to get that elusive win in the Nutter Center.

This article from the Dayton Daily News gives some insight in to the struggles WSU has been dealing with

FAIRBORN — They are a young team that’s searching for an identity, a leader...and a win.
Although Wright State lost to Cleveland State, 45-43, on a last-second tip-in, the Raiders got a little closer to all three Thursday night at the Nutter Center.
Cleveland State may be the best team in the league, but WSU went toe to toe with the Vikings — and could have won were it not for two miscues in the final 30 seconds: a midcourt turnover and then a missed box out on D’Aundary Brown’s run-to-the-hoop tip in.
Although the Raiders have now lost four in a row, CSU coach Gary Waters saluted them afterward. He talked about how his team had to work for every possession and said:
“Hear me what I’m saying. They’re gonna be a tough team this year to beat in this place.”
“They’re trying to find themselves with a young team...They just don’t have a lot of guys who have played together. Once they do, they’re gonna be OK.”
In so many words, he also was talking about a leader needing to emerge and you saw glimmers of that happening Thursday with the return of Matt Vest.
After spraining an ankle in the exhibition game against Central State, the 6-foot-5 sophomore guard from Chaminade Julienne High School missed the first six games of the season, then played just four minutes last Saturday against Charlotte. Thursday night he started, played 22 minutes and finished with seven points, three rebounds two assists and a steal against three turnovers.
The stat line, though, wasn’t what was most important. It was the emotion and understanding with which he plays, and it’s something coach Billy Donlon hopes he can infuse into others.
“Nobody in our program has been here longer than two years so they don’t really know what Wright State means,” Donlon said. “They don’t know the history and what’s gone on here. I’m not just talking about since Coach (Brad) Brownell was the coach, I’m talking about long ago. I’m talking about building the program up in the ’70s, the Division II national championship in the early ’80s, becoming Division I and building an 11,000-seat arena in the early ’90s.
“It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to build the program...which obviously Matt’s father was a part of. So it just takes one guy like (Matt) to pass that message on to other guys. That’s the issue of our youthfulness. There’s not enough blood, sweat and tears in that locker room yet for guys to understand.”
Mark Vest, Matt’s dad, played at WSU in the mid-1980s, was one of the program’s greatest scorers and is in the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
In private afterward, Matt at first said he wasn’t sure what family history had to do with now, but after thinking about it a while, he was willing to admit: “Deep down I do know this is a winning program. And being around Wright State basketball my whole life maybe makes me want to win a little more. I have a little something extra because I know what this means to everybody.”
Donlon believes that sincerely: “This is about family here. For me, people will quit on themselves faster than they quit on other people in general. If you know something’s up for grabs for someone else you tend to be there more, to play with more grit.
“Matt feels that. He plays with great emotion. He plays for the history of the program. He’s the one who can get the others to understand that and when they do, we’ll be the better for it.
Vest thought the Raiders took a step in that direction Thursday:
“We learned something about ourselves tonight. This game showed that we can win this league. This game came down to two or three stops at the end. We’ve got to be there for each other just a little more.”
Sounds like an identity and a leader may be emerging.

Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. The game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM and will be videostreamed on HorizonLeague.com.

Best Start Since 2000-01
The Guins are off to their best start since the 2000-01 season which they went 19-11. Now the Penguins are searching for their first 6-1 start since the beginning of the 1994-95 season. That season, YSU went 18-10.

Starting League Play On Road, AGAIN
This will be the third straight season and the seventh time in the last eight years the Guins open Horizon League play on the road.

Never 2-0 In HL Play
Youngstown State is also looking to start 2-0 in the Horizon League since joining the circuit in 2001-02. The last time the Guins began a conference slate 2-0 was during the 1999-2000 season when they were members of the Mid-Contintent Conference.

Brooks Has Career Day at Detroit
Senior DuShawn Brooks turned in a career-best performance with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range.

Guins Celebrate 40 Years in Beeghly
The 2011-12 campaign is the 40th season the Beeghly Center has been the home of Youngstown State men's basketball. YSU first took to the court in the Beeghly Center in 1972-73. YSU has a record of 315-233 in games played in the Beeghly Center.

Nearing 1,000 Wins
The Guins are approaching a significant milestone in the program's history. YSU has won 997 games and needs just three more to collect the program's 1,000th win.

The Wright State Series
This is the 42nd meeting between Youngstown State and Wright State in a series that dates back to 1977. The Raiders own a 35-7 advantage in the all-time series and have won eight straight against the Guins. The last YSU win was a 72-57 victory at the Beeghly Center on Feb. 23, 2007.

About Wright State
Wright State is currently 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the Horizon League. The Raiders, who have lost four straight, are coming off a 45-43 loss to Cleveland State on Dec. 1 at the Nutter Center. Julius Mays leads the Raiders with 9.9 points per game.

Last Time Out
A late 3-point barrage from senior DuShawn Brooks and three free throws from sophomore Kendrick Perry sealed a 64-61 win over Detroit on Dec. 1 at Calihan Hall. Brooks scored a career-high 24 points with a career-best six 3-pointers, including two in the final 1:55 of the game. Perry scored 13 points and dished out four assists.

A Win Will
•Improve YSU 6-1 on the year.
• Mark YSU's fourth road win of the season.
• Mark the first time since 1994-95 YSU will be a season 6-1.
• Mark the program's eighth win over Wright State.
• Mark Head Coach Jerry Slocum's 644th career victory and his 64th at Youngstown State.
• Mark YSU's 998th victory in the program's history.
• Mark the first time since joining the Horizon League the Guins started 2-0 in league play.
• Mark the first time since 1999-2000 the Guins began conference play with a 2-0 record.

Ward Moves Into 10th
With a 3-pointer against Detroit on Dec. 1, senior Ashen Ward has moved into 10th place on the YSU career 3-pointers made chart. He needs six more to tie Dave Henderson (113, 1994-97) for ninth place on the list.

Brooks Clutch Late
Senior DuShawn Brooks has hit some clutch shots late in last two games for the Guins. In the win against Detroit, Brooks nailed two 3-pointers in the last 1:55, including one to give the lead for good. Also against Saint Francis on Nov. 26, Brooks made his first 3-pointer of the season with just over two minutes remaining for the game-deciding basket. After starting 0-for-7 from 3-point range, Brooks has made 7-of-10 from behind the arc.

Eargle Second Nationally
Junior Damian Eargle continues to be a one of the top shot blockers in the country. Eargle currently ranks second nationally with 4.3 blocks per game. Last season, he finished the year ranked 10th in the country with 3.0 blocks per game.

KP Diggin Doubles
Sophomore Kendrick Perry is the only YSU player to score in double figures in all six games this season. As a matter of fact, Perry has scored at least 10 points in nine straight games dating back to last season. Over that span, Perry is averaging 16.9 points per game.

Eargle Nearing Third in Blocks
In just 36 games played at YSU, junior Damian Eargle ranks fourth all-time with 117 career blocks. He needs two more to move into third place past Jack Liles (118, 2005-09).

Mega-Minute Man
Sophomore Blake Allen has been clocking "big-time" minutes for the Guins. Three times this season, Allen has played in every minute (45 vs. UC-Riverside on Nov. 18, 40 against Penn State on Nov. 23, and 40 against Detroit on Dec. 1), and he played 39 against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Nov. 26. Allen, who has played in 164 of the last 165 minutes, leads the Horizon League with 38.5 minutes played.

Allen, Perry Score 20
Junior Blake Allen and sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first duo to score at least 20 points in game since Vytas Sulskis (25) and Damian Eargle (24) accomplished the feat against Malone on Dec. 13, 2010. Allen scored 25 and Perry posted 23 against Penn State on Nov. 23.

Guins Tie 3-Point Record, Again
For the second time this season, the Guins tied the school single-game mark with 14 3-pointers game against Penn State on Nov. 23. The Guins also made 14 against Notre Dame College on Nov. 15. The previous time YSU made 14 3 pointers in a game was against Butler on Jan. 9, 2011.

Fewest Points In Win Since 2000
The Guins' 53 points in the victory over UC-Riverside are the fewest points scored in win since they defeated IUPUI, 43-41, on Jan. 6, 2000.

Eargle Just Missed Triple Double
Damian Eargle nearly missed becoming the first player in YSU history to record a triple-double of any variety. Eargle scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks against UC-Riverside on Nov. 18.

Guins Top 3-Point Team
Just five games into the season, the Guins are the Horizon League's top 3-point shooting team. YSU leads the circuit with a .409 3-point percentage and 9.0 3-pointers made per game.

Up Next
The Guins return home to face Fredonia State, Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.

Slocum In Elite Company
Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum is one of just 11 active Division I head coaches with at least 600 career victories. Slocum currently ranks sixth on that list with 643 career coaching victories.

Three Guins Among 3-Point Leaders
The Guins have been living by the 3-pointer early in the season. YSU players are scattered in the top three in the Horizon League when it comes to 3-pointers made per game. Junior Blake Allen leads the league with 2.8 3-pointers made per game while sophomore Kendrick Perry ranks second with 2.3 made per game. Senior Ashen Ward is tied for ninth with 1.7 3-pointers made per contest.

Eargle Has Chance For 1,000
In under three seasons of playing college basketball, junior Damian Eargle has scored more than 600 points with 671. Eargle needs just 329 more points to reach 1,000 for his entire career, which includes 268 points during the 2008-09 season at UNC-Greensboro. Last season, Eargle ranked second on the squad with 339 points for an average of 11.3 points per game.

Perry Nets Career Scoring High
Sophomore Kendrick Perry scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Guins to a 76-69 win over Samford on Nov. 12. Perry's 28 points are the most points scored by a sophomore since Doug Underwood scored 28 against Green Bay on Jan. 29, 2003. He also made four 3-pointers with four assists and four steals.

Last to Score 30
With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.

Where's Big D for a little insight?

We are very young and 9 of the players on our roster are new to our team.  I really like the talent and size we have, but we are a year away from being a player in the HL race.   We are still too inconsistent and not doing all of the little thing we need to do to finish out close games against good teams.  For example, we missed several FTs at the end of last night's game vs CSU that would have given us a W.

I think you will see a good game Saturday between our 2 teams.

Wright State 3-point favorite over YSU
Cleveland State 4-point favorite over Detroit
Wisc-Milwaukee 15-1/2 over Illinois-Chicago
Butler 5-point favorite over Valpo
Wisc Green-Bay 7-point favorite ocer Loyola

Key to victory: I don't bet Penguins today.

Had them vs UC Riverside and Penn State and lost. Layed off vs Detroit and we win outright as 6-point dog.

I'll lay off again today and root them in.
