Our basketball is not the best BUT......
« on: January 16, 2012, 06:04:20 PM »
CAN ANY OF YOU THAT POST HERE TELL ME WHY.....

Nobody cares about Basketball.?  I have cared at YSU for
well since 1964, you do the Math (it makes me feel old).  In
that time I missed two years.  I have lived long enough
in Youngstown (since 1933) to know, IF your team is
not a WINNER....FORGET IT, nobody wants to cheer for
you.  Why is this?  One winner, one loser is how Basketball
goes.  I know since Dom is gone, we have had so very few
winning seasons; but how can we combat this?  YSU can not
afford an"outstanding" Coach (sorry Mr. Slocum, I happen to
think you are worth your salt) so what is the next step.  We
can't feed money into the program (apparently).  So where
do we go from here?  I for one, do not want YSU not to have
Basketball.  How about you?  What do you think or care about
the program.  Sorry, don't give me the Mr. Strollo has to go
bit....Not his fault.  Very seriously, IMO, if we could keep Coach
Slocum, and get players (with my enthusiasm) we could hit the
charts.

Right on with those last two sentences Pita. We have benefited from exposure. Do you realize how much of a celebrity Slocum was when Butler was making their run? Now any player that saw that, and feels he is the big man we need, will now think at least twice about coming here. I think we need to renew coach S's contract ASAP ...let him get to work with the administration behind him. Even if it is a short duration. All season I have felt like he has had a gun to his head. I want the team to win merely to keep him, when it should be for the enjoyment of the game. We have had better attendance than this with worse teams. Same thing with coach H in football, it simply takes all the fun out of it. Now all I can think about is where we would be right now with this same influx of FB money, coach H working the D, and coach M working the O. We lost one major sport HC, and I feel it is too soon to lose another.

I'm not sure anybody cares about anything sports at YSU except us die hards from way back in the days!!  Sadly $$$ and wins rule the NCAA and sports and YSU don't have much of either, that means nobody cares  ::)

Pita,

I first became a Youngstown fan through basketball when my father took me to games at the South High fieldhouse during the 1960s.  I was a kid, but the place seemed packed to me, and we certainly packed Beeghly during the Covington years of the 1970s and the Rice years (with Dom's last batch of recruits) during the early 1980s.

My explanation for the demise of interest in YSU basketball includes the following:

1. Continuous losing for about three decades destroys the interest for all but the most fanatical loyalists.
2. Most of the people that packed South and Beeghly decades ago have moved away or passed away.
3. The sports culture of the Mahoning Valley, which at one time seemed balanced, has shifted radically into a football only mode.  That is reflected in the high schools where football is quite good and basketball is horrible.
4. Building Stambaugh stadium and success in the national playoffs has given residents the opportunity to express pride in the community and university through a sport that they like above all others.  Remember during the 1960s, football had no home, no league, and no playoffs.  Unlike today, nothing around which to rally community support.  I know at least fifteen people who never miss a YSU football game but never step into our gym.  When I ask them why, the response is invariably "I don't like basketball."

That is my two cents.

Wick

I have to match you with, I know at least 20 people who do care about BB.
I really don't think that is the problem.  Can't blame student attendance,
cause they don't go to football games either.  I too, was at South High for
our games, started in 63-64 season, my significant other way before that
with his Dad.  I truly can't find reasoning for lack of interest, EXCEPT, in
Youngstown if a team, any team doesn't win constantly...NOBODY GOES.

HOW can we possibly solve this????  Loyalty from fans no longer exists in
todays world.....just one of the many unfortunate things, as the  world goes
on.

Wish we could form a club that could stimulate interest.  Sorry can't afford
that $500.00 per thing.....my meds deplete my funds.

No one cares.

Just like to butch a lot.

I rest my case.  I do wish Coach Slocum and the team
the best for the remaining season.  After that, who
knows, who cares.

I really care.  It's hard being a YSU basketball fan.  This year has had it's ups and downs but still a very exciting season!

Butch.  Was not a spelling error.  Purposely did not spell the swear word.
Sorry if I confused you.

Would have loved to been at the Milwaukee game.  Sometimes life isn't that easy.

Geez, flattered that you noticed we weren't there.
