Expectations for next year?
« on: February 03, 2012, 07:50:02 PM »
Lets face it, nobody really cares about Football in the Valley, sure its nice to support the schools other teams, but unless they are doing well, people just dont care.

after reading some info and watching film, theres 4 freshman who i think will have an instant impact

6'5 Chavien Nolcox should take Davion Rogers spot on starting on D, he has fantastic read and react skills and always is around the ball, he is also a very solid tackler, always wraps up and goes untill the whistle

Dylan Colucci will probably be in the 2 deep at the start of the season somewhere on the OL, Kid is as strong as a Bull and runs through DL on blocks like a hot knife through butter. doesnt have the greatest foot work so probably a RT or RG guy, but will be fantastic to have on the goal line and short yard situations

Christian Wilson was the highest rated OT to sign with an FCS school, big body, also needs help with his foot work, more of a RT project but could be very good, should also be in the 2 deep

Anthony Szymczak a big DT, had a great wrestling career in PA and was honorable mention in football for his level (AAAA), very good run stuffing DT, at 6'3 315 we needed some big boys up the middle as we got gashed alot

next year i expect the offense to be even better,  Hess is a year older, a year wiser, a year more developed. we had a pretty balanced offense but i feel like we will pass the ball more next year with Hess being in his 4th year now he knows the offense, he knows the talent at other schools.

our front 7 should also be better vs the run, we got 4 DTs 285+ up , we also had some solid LB last year and added a few more good ones

secondary is still in question as is pass rush from the DE, that depends on who our DC coach is next year

next year we start out with Pitt, which is probably a 50/50 toss up game, im not impressed with anybody on their coaching staff and they didnt seem too talent last year, but they still are a big BCS School

Valpo should be another blowout victory, Albany should be another easy win

then comes a test in Northern Iowa, the good news we have them at home, the bad news they are always good. this year we damn near beat them in their own place and if they had a 6'1 RB insted of 6'3-6'4 we win by a FG.

they lose their starting QB and also leading rusher #1 WR, #3 WR, best CB, and their  top 4 out of 5 leading tacklers

it is UNI so they tend to rebuild, but will they be rebuild by the 4th game?

we have a bye in week 5

and NDSU who we upset and gave the NC their only loss of the year

ND loses their 2nd leading rusher, #1 WR, #1 TE, and their top 2 leading tacklers

NDSU looks to have been a fairley young team like YSU, they had more JR starters then us but about the same amount of seniors starting, will be an interesting game, but we have to play them at their place and they will definatley want payback

http://paneech.com/2011/12/2012-youngstown-state-football-schedule-announced/

i think a realistic finish would be from 7-4 to 11-0 depending on the DC
if we finish 7-4, winning at least 2 out of 3 from Pitt, UNI and NDSU is key
if we go 1-3 or 0-3 kiss but still go 7-4 kiss playoffs goodbye

A NC sure would be great, certainly a deep playoff run is expected

We donn't even have a DC right now.  We have only a few games to get the defense in order before we play UNI.  The defensive backs have had virtually ZERO coaching and the rest of the team has to learn the new scheme as well.  While I believe that the defense is a little easier to get working efficiently, this is no easy task.  The DB's are going to be able to apply what they learned agianst Pitt at game speed.  Hopefully they don't get overconfident after they play Valpo and Albany.  They could end up in a mess with UNI when they are tested.  The only thing I will say is that assuming there is a coaching improvement, the DB's can only get better, the LB's will hopefully be utilized correctly, and the kids will play to win when they are ahead.

Kravitz wasn't the problem. The problem was they had "little" talent.....or "young" talent in the secondary while he was there.

He was the odd man out. Wolf needed to blame someone....Kravitz was it. That's not a knock on Wolf. That's how the game is played. You get 25 or so schollys each year....if Kravitz would have gotten 2-3 great DB's each year....he'd still be here now. But other issues (positions) needed to be addressed.

Hence......he's toast. He understands that. That's the life of a coach. Unless of course, you catch "lightening in bottle".....get lucky.....with great coaches in great situations.....everything works in a timely manner...and you become the "hot guy".

Then you can play that out for 10 years, make huge cash......and be better than average......and keep your job.

Pizza,

I have to respectfully disagree. Heacock had better defenses with less talent. Over the last 2 years our LB's have been non-existent. The CB's have not improved. Yes I know we had some injuries, but we didn't improve.

right on the money. Until we bring back Penguin defense, we are nothing. NDSU has shown us this. Heacock had a dozen better defenses than the one we saw from NDSU last year. Now we have a problem as well. Our talent is for Florida-style defense. Will be interesting to see what happens. YSU is NEVER going to have the talent-level to play "Florida" defense. It all based off of individual effort. 4-guys play defense ...the rest rush the QB. That is how they do it. Those 4-players have to be the best in the nation.

Lol......I'm not trying to compare the two. Heacock was a brilliant DC. I witnessed it firsthand. Heacock had it all IMO....His hands are heavy with "rings" to prove it.

I'm just throwing out a "bone" to a guy who many/most of the current players liked and "played hard" for.

Over the next few years...that same compliment will be awarded to "some". And NOT TO ALL.

Kravitz was a terrible DC that is why he has bounced around so many jobs prior to YSU.  Saying he didin't have talent is an excuse.  When our DB's just look at the ball being thrown and  playing 10 yards off the receiver that is coaching and scheme.  He sucked and hopefully we get someone who can get the defensive schemes put togther in spring ball.   We have reruited talent in the secondary with this recruiting class so talent is in the house.

I am relativley certain that some Good coaches recognize the potential of this team with the level of talent and age of the team. We should get a good one.

No doubt. The "table has been set". Some lucky "D Coordinator" will be able to take advantage of it.

Then he'll be the "NEW" .....Hot Guy......being in the right place at the right time......does matter.

Got to have the talent to make it happen though.
