YSU up 58-44 with 347 left.  UGA ball coming out of media timeout.  Need some stops on defense and be patient on offense and milk the clock some.

taking back my comment about officials - KP was fouled there and offensive foul call on Eargle had me scratching my head.

Need some buckes.

Final score - YSU 68 Georgia 56.  Huge win for YSU.  KP with 23, Belin with 17.  The two guys who didn't score in double figures at GWU lead the way tonight.  Going to be a fun year with that kind of balance.  Get out Friday night to catch this team in the home opener.

This team is legit! KP is a monster. Belin is just what we needed. Guy who can play inside with Eargle but who can also shoot it very well. Great start to the season

Interesting message board reading.  On the GW board its not Youngstown Freaking State any more - its hey those guys might be pretty good.  On the UGA board, total meltdown.   lets hope we keep that up.  And lets hope that's not us any time soon.  :)

Around mid-October, it seemed odd that Youngstown State wasn't getting more love in the Horizon League, or even outside of it. The Penguins had a dynamic duo in Kendrick Perry and Damian Eargle, one an offensive specialist, the other a force on the other end of the court.

Monday night, the two combined to shut down the majority of the Georgia Bulldogs to win in the Legends Classic 68-56.

The line of the night is going to belong to Perry, who scored 23 points, including a 10-for-11 performance at the free throw line. He added six boards, five assists, four steals and a block for good measure. The only way to stop him was to send him to the free throw line, and you can see how well that worked out for the Bulldogs.

But there is often the unsung hero in the bunch, and Monday that was Eargle, who long reach and tenacity on the defensive end was a huge benefit to the Penguins. He clogged the inside and frustrated the Bulldogs as they tried to back him down or go around him.

The senior added 10 rebounds to his 10 points, and led Youngstown State with three of its seven blocks. The swat fest was part of the reason that Georgia shot just 32 percent from the field.

The Bulldogs may use a deep rotation to get some of their younger players experience, but this wasn't at all about inexperience on the floor for Georgia. This was all about the stunning defense that Youngstown played throughout the night on everyone by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The sophomore led the Bulldogs with 27 points, including a 5-for-11 performance from 3-point range.

Youngstown State will take on St. Francis of Pennsylvania on Friday.

ATHENS - The Georgia men’s basketball team suffered a very early, very bad early-season stumble on Monday night.

Youngstown State delivered a convincing defeat of Georgia, 68-56, which never led and played horrendous offense for much of the game.

“We set the game back 10 years the way we played offensively in the first half,” Bulldogs head coach Mark Fox said.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope did what he could for Georgia, scoring 27 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field. The rest of the team shot 7-for-35, and sophomore forward Nemanja Djurisic, perhaps the team’s second-best player, was 0-for-9.

“Kentavious was great,” Djurisic said. “He was a true leader tonight. And we failed as teammates to follow him, and definitely me in the first place.”

The problem at first was offense. But as the game hit the stretch, and Georgia finally got its offense going, its defense failed.

Youngstown State was 14-15 last year, and had an RPI rank of 170. Georgia, which is now 1-1, is set to face No. 1 Indiana on Monday in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Georgia, which was out-rebounded and had trouble scoring inside, played without forward Donte’ Williams, a result of team discipline. But Fox didn’t blame that for the loss.

“The list of things we’ve gotta address is – you think of something with basketball, we’ve gotta address it,” Fox said. “So to answer your question, I’m not trying to be a smart-aleck, but we’ve got a lot of things we’ve gotta clean up.”

***

Fox was very up-front in his postgame comments. Here are the highlights:

- “They came in here to beat our tail and that’s what I did. We played very poorly offensively in the first half. We set the game back 10 years the way we played offensively in the first half.”

- “We didn’t play well the other night when we had a lead and we got away with it with a win. Tonight we didn’t get away with it, and hopefully this will be a good steppingstone for us, because this is certainly a teachable moment.”

- “Poor Nemi just could not get a ball to go in the basket. We had some great shots. We had Charles, and Marcus and even Kenatavious with some shots around the basket in the first half that just did not go in. And the frustration just kept building on them. And Nemi never could get out of it.”

- “Donte’s a pretty big difference, I’ll tell you that much. We got pounded on the glass tonight. And when you can offensive rebound and put a few back in, that takes some pressure off you offensively. But that’s not why we lost the game, that’s for darn sure.”

- “I didn’t tell the team that (they don't have confidence on offense). I’m telling you that. I told my team if they play like I tell them to play, they’ll have a good basketball team. But they’ve gotta play like we tell them to play.”

ATHENS — The frustration was evident.
From Georgia coach Mark Fox down to his players, all were at a loss to explain another poor shooting performance in a 68-56 loss to Youngstown State in the first round of the Legends Classic at Stegeman Coliseum on Monday night.

Georgia (1-1) shot 32.1 percent from the field (17-for-53), an improvement from its 12.5 percent shooting in the first half, when the Bulldogs missed open looks all over the court.

“They came in here and beat our tail,” Fox said. “We set the game back 10 years the way we played offensively in the first half.”

The poor shooting was a carryover from Georgia’s opener, a 68-62 win over Jacksonville on Friday. Despite that victory, the Bulldogs didn’t score from the field in the final 6:19 and shot 30.4 percent (7-for-23) in the second half.

On Monday, they made one shot from the field in the first 7:55 and finished the first half just 3-of-24.
Combine the second half of Friday’s game with the first half of Monday’s game and the Bulldogs went into halftime with 10 field goals in its previous 46 shots (21.7 percent).

“We didn’t shoot the ball very well and put a lot of pressure on our defense,” Georgia’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope said. “We’ve got to get some things corrected. We got too far behind and when it came to the moment of truth, we didn’t make enough plays to get ourselves out of the hole.”

Caldwell-Pope hit five 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 27 points, but had no offensive support.
Marcus Thornton had eight points, but Nemanja Djurisic, who had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the opener, repeatedly had scoring opportunities inside, but was 0-for-9 from the field and scored just two points.

“I think this is the first time I have this many missed layups,” Djurisic said. “I just couldn’t get back into rhythm. I was trying very hard and they were passing me the ball. They were very trusting. Very, very frustrating. I can’t say much about it.”

Youngstown State led throughout, but Georgia rallied to start the second half and cut the lead to 32-29 on Caldwell-Pope’s 3-pointer with 15:30 left. He picked up his third foul and left for four minutes, but the Bulldogs stayed close, trailing 40-33 with 10:22 left.

Youngstown State (2-0) then put the game away with an 11-0 run.

YSU’s Kamren Belin, who is from Marietta and played at Walton, made two free throws and hit a 3-pointer before Kendrick Perry scored the next six points for a 51-33 lead with 7:48 remaining.

Perry, who led the Horizon League in scoring last year, led the Penguins with 23 points. Belin added 17.
“We got beat by a good team,” Thornton said. “Some days shots just do not go in, and (Monday) was one of those days for everybody. We can’t think about what other people are going to be saying about our team. We just have to pick our heads up and move forward.”

Youngstown State also out-rebounded the Bulldogs 42-31, had seven blocks and forced Georgia into 15 turnovers.

“The list of things we need to address, if you think of something about basketball, we have to address it,” Fox said. “We have a lot of things we have to clean up.”

In the early going of a long night of college basketball, Youngstown State delivers the first surprise of the night.

The Penguins (I still love the mascot) beat Georgia in Athens in the Progressive Legends Classic, 68-56. The loss is the first for the Bulldogs this season.

While Youngstown State was billed as a much-improved team in the Horizon League, I don’t think anyone thought this would be the case. Georgia never led and only scored 14 points in the first half (YSU led 25-14 at halftime).

While every team has their struggles in the early season, the biggest problem was probably that Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was the lone Bulldog in double-figures in points — and it wasn’t even close — with 27, making 10 of the team’s 17 field goals, including five of their six threes. Tim Dixon and Marcus Thornton had eight each for Georgia.

Kendrick Perry, a front-runner for Horizon League Player of the Year, led the Penguins (seriously though, isn’t that animal just awesome for a mascot?) with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. He was also 10-for-11 from the free throw line as well.

In yet another stupid rule that needs to be changed, however, Youngstown State won’t get a berth in the tournament semifinals in Brooklyn at the Barclays Center, because the last four teams that make it are predetermined. What a waste, because I think Perry could hang with the big boys.

Very impressive win. The announcers seemed very pro-UGA but what do you expect? It was their tourney and they already got the bid to NYC....what a crock that was.

A great win for YSU! The defense was super in the 1st half with Eargle doing a great job on the boards and blocking shots. Then Perry, over his stomach flu, made some critical baskets and was outstanding at the foul line. He will be a force against future opponents. He did have a lot of help from Belin.

When was the last time you saw YSU out rebound a major team 42-31?

This was a suberb win which elevated the team to a new dignified level.

Now, we must continue this winning attitude through the rest of the season.

GO PENGUINS!!
