The Youngstown State women's basketball team saw its perfect record at home end on Saturday night falling 59-41 to Green Bay at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins had won their first six at home this season before dropping the contest to Green Bay on Saturday. The loss drops YSU to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in the Horizon League. Green Bay improves to 14-2 and 4-0.
Youngstown State came out strong the first nine-and-a-half minutes, twice building a five-point lead. But a rough patch the final 10 minutes of the first half was too much to overcome.
The final 10-plus minutes of the first half put the Penguins in a big whole. After taking a 17-12 lead on a basket by Brown at the 10:33 mark, YSU scored just two points the remainder of the half. In that stretch, the Guins committed 10 turnovers and missed 7-of-8 shots from the field. The lone bucket was by Brandi Brown at the 4:53 mark, which brought the Penguins within 20-19 despite their offensive missteps.
For the frame, YSU shot 33.3 percent (7-of-21) while Green Bay connected on 44 percent (11-of-25). The Penguins committed 14 turnovers while the Phoenix had nine in the first half. For the Guins, 14 of the 21 shots were behind the 3-point arc.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Liz Hornberger pulled the Guins within 30-27 at the 15:53 mark of the second half, but the Phoenix were able to stretch that lead out to 50-33 with 8:30 remaining. YSU never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Brown finished with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Karen Flagg and Hornberger both finished with eight for the Penguins.
Leading the way for Green Bay was Lydia Bauer who scored 15 points while Stephanie Sension had 12.
The Phoenix outscored the Penguins 35-22 in the second stanza. For the game, YSU shot 32.6 percent (14-of-43) while Green Bay made 22-of-48 (45.8 percent).
YSU returns to the road on Thursday night for a contest at Cleveland State. Tipoff at the Wolstein Center is set for 7 p.m.
