2012-13 Men’s Basketball Season Highlights

The Youngstown State men's basketball team just wrapped up one of the most successful and historic seasons since the program joined the Division I ranks in 1981-82.

Finishing with an overall record of 18-16, the Penguins posted the most wins since 2000-01 and secured the first postseason tournament berth in their Division I history.  The 18-16 record also marked the first consecutive winning seasons for the program since 1983-84 and 1984-85. The 2011-12 squad ended with a 16-15 mark.

The Penguins played in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament and advanced to the second round after knocking off Oakland, 99-87, in the first round. The Penguins lost to Canisius in overtime, 84-82, in round two.

Below is a litany of team highlights and individual accomplishments from the 2012-13 season:

    The Penguins started the year with the program's first win over a BCS opponent after knocking off Georgia, 68-56, in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU.
    The Guins' 17 Horizon League wins over the past two seasons are the most since joining the league in 2001-02.
    Head Coach Jerry Slocum moved into second place on the school's all-time wins list with 92.
    The Penguins also hosted a first-round Horizon League Tournament game and advanced to the second round for the second straight season.
    The Penguins set a school record for most points in a season with 2,426, breaking the record of 2,388 set in 1990-91.
    The Penguins also set a school mark for most games played in a season with 34.
    The Penguins went 12-5 at home this season, the most home wins since the 1984-85 season.
    The Penguins' 242 3-pointers made are the second-most in school history and mark the third straight season with at least 235 made 3-pointers.
    Three players scored their 1,000th career point this season, marking the first time in school history three players accomplished the feat in the same season.
    Junior Kendrick Perry became the 33rd player in school history to score 1,000 career points. He ranks 17th all-time with 1,309 career points.
    Senior Damian Eargle became the 34th player in school history to score 1,000 points and ranks 25th all-time with 1,061 career points.
    Senior Blake Allen became the 35th player YSU player to score 1,000 points and ranks 29th on the all-time scoring list with 1,032 career points.
    Perry also became just the second player in school history to earn back-to-back All-Horizon League First-Team honors. He was also named to the Horizon League All-Defensive Team.
    Perry also moved into the top three in career steals and top five in career assists in school history.
    Perry is the only player in school history to have scored 1,300 points with 360 assists and 170 steals in a career.
    Perry led the team and ranked second in the Horizon League with 17.3 points per game. His scoring averaging was the highest since Quin Humphrey averaged 18.8 points per game in 2006-07.
    Perry also scored 519 points, marking the first consecutive 500-point seasons since Quin Humphrey in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
    Eargle was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked shots.
    Eargle became the Horizon League's and Youngstown State's all-time leader in blocks this season with 309 career blocks.
     Eargle posted 102 blocks, which rank third on the YSU single-season list.
    Eargle is the only player in school history with 1,000 points, 620 rebounds and 300 blocks in a career.
    Allen became Youngstown State's career record holder for most 3-pointers made in a career and holds the record with 232.
    Allen also set the YSU single-season record with 94 made 3-pointers this season.
    Junior Kamren Belin was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team.
    Belin averaged 12.3 points per game against Horizon League opponents.
