FAIRBORN — A Wright State University basketball player appeared in Fairborn Municipal Court Monday after being arrested over the weekend on four misdemeanor charges.

Tavares Sledge, 22, was arrested by Wright State University police on Sept. 28 on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge. According to sources, the incident involved his live-in girlfriend and their infant child.

According to court records, Sledge was also charged by Fairborn police with misdemeanor child endangering, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. We are working to learn from both police agencies the details of the incident that led to the charges.

At his court appearance, Fairborn Municipal Court Judge Beth Root ordered Sledge to have no contact with his child's mother. Wright State University basketball head coach Billy Donlon was in court today with Sledge. When approached following the court proceeding, Donlon said, "No comment. We'll release a statement by the end of the day."

Sledge could face jail time and fines if convicted.

Sledge is a 6-foot-9 junior forward from Mobile, Ala. He played in 34 games last season, including 23 starts, and averaged 4.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per contest. Sledge was the Raiders' second-leading rebounder last season.

Expectations are high for Wright State, which returns its top nine scorers, including Sledge, from a team that won 23 games last season.

Wright State had its first practice for the 2013-14 season on Sunday.

Judging by the verbiage ...he is going to remain on the team.

I don't think there's any doubt about that.  I'm sure a  suspension for their exhibition aganist Findlay (who is usually a really good team) or their opener against Division III Mount St. Jospeh is in store.

If he's suspended for their second (Georgetown) and third (DePaul) games I would be pleasantly surprised.

Wright State announces junior forward Tavares Sledge has been suspended indefinitely after arrest following incident Saturday night.

Of course, with no games at all until November 1, indefinitely could well be shorter than one month.

That's BS.  Our coaching staff has a history of giving real punishments for breaking the law.  Our best player, Vaughn Duggins, got a DUI a few years ago and was suspended several games.  Sledge broke team rules last summer and was suspended the first 3-4 games of the season.

If he is convicted of this, he will be kicked off the team and most likely kicked out of school.

Yes Big D I agree, if he is a two-time loser ...it will be hard to justify keeping him.

Wright State suspended Sledge pending the outcome of his court case.  If found guilty, he won't be allowed back on the team and will most likely be kicked out of school.  If found not guilty, he will probably be allowed back on the team.  This is America where you are still innocent until proven guilty.  You cannot just kick him out of school until he has been found guilty of something first, otherwise WSU opens itself up to legal action.   Just ask Xavier about that.
