Nick Liste Ties School-Record With Fourth Player-of-the-Week Nod

St. Louis, Mo. - Youngstown State senior punter Nick Liste earned his second Missouri Valley Football Conference special teams Player of the Week award and fourth of his career, which ties a school record, the league announced.

Liste joins former punter Joe Bishop as the only Penguins to be named MVFC Special Teams Player of the Week on four occasions. Bishop was a two-time pick in 2005 and 2006. Liste was selected as the conference's Specialist of the Week once in 2011 (NDSU) and once in 2012 (WIU).

Liste had two punts downed on the WIU 1-yard line and averaged 43.4 yards on five punts in the Penguins' 24-14 win over Western Illinois on Saturday. Liste had punts of 55 (downed at the 1), 53, 44, 35 (downed at the 1) and 30 yards. He also had five kickoffs in the game, one for touchback on a cold and windy evening.

Earlier this year he was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week against Michigan State.

YSU has had a solid run of conference Players of the Week this year. It marks the seventh consecutive week that a Penguin was honored by the league for a performance.

The Penguins are off this Saturday before travelling to South Dakota to take on the Coyotes on Nov. 2.

Why is that highly doutbful?  Liste plays better than most FBS kickers.  When you can consistently kick the ball out of the endzone and you can spot punts on the 1 yard line you are a pro prospect.

because NFL teams dont often look to replace punters with rookies they look for guys who are already in the league, i've only seen 1 rookie punter this year and dont remember any last year, Punter just isn't a position guys get a shot at.  he should start learning how to drill 50+ yard field goals

Some people are of the philosophy that the most important play in the game is the punt.  If that is the case why would NFL coaches think the punter is an afterthought?  Think about the value of field position.

I think he will get some looks, but a lot of people don't realize just how difficult it is to make it on an NFL roster as a specialist. 

In most years, there are only 32 kickers and 32 punters in the league.  Taking a random guess, I'll assume that 28ish are retained each year.  Which leaves a window of 4 openings at each position.  Thats not much. 

I thought since his freshman year that he had a chance.  He definitely still does.  I think he'll get a look in preseason and from there its all up to him and the situation that organization is in.  Alot of teams just bring in a kicker or punter in preseason to rest their kickers leg before the season.  When really, that young kicker has no chance of making it.

Getting a shot to make a team is a whole lot different than earning a job.

I think he has prepared enough to get an invite to a camp.  It would very surprising for him to win a job right out of school. 

From there its likely how hard does he keep working at?  Can he afford to keep working at it?

Its has to be hard for guys to keep trying to chase the NFL dream while at the same time earn a living.

Yea it is very different.  Well then to answer the question, I believe he'll definitely get a shot. 

And to respond to another point you make, its very hard to keep the dream alive while also moving on with life after football.  I've known a few kickers that worked full time and were still training on the side.  I think Nick's a smart kid, he knows how much he wants it; and thats what matters most.  He has the talent.

again, how many rookie punters are on 53 man rosters? ive seen 1. teams might not keep punters around very long if they aren't very good but thers only maybe 3-5 teams who change punters and they tend to give guys who have NFL history a shot over a rookie.

Mark my words. You will see a move toward distance punters in the NFL, over the next few years. Whenever a change takes place in specialists, it is "wholesale" ...they all do the same thing.

I was talking with a recruiter at the ILS game. He was there to see Underwood (whom I think is a true draft-prospect). However, every single time that List kicked-off, he flipped his piece of paper over and wrote down the distance. So Liste is already noticed. We have so many great seniors this year, it will be hard to give Liste the POY award ...but so far I think we have to.
