Well, the 6-0 start turned into a mirage. I was hoping that the losses at CSU and WSU were the result of bad match-ups against superior athletes. There was nothing superior about the competition today, yet we allowed them to score 29 points in the first 9 minutes. Do the math. This team now either refuses to play any defense or, more likely, lacks the talent to play defense consistently at a high level.
I am not angry or displeased with Barnes. The six consecutive wins now look like a masterful example of overachieving. He really inherited only one first-rate player once Davis suffered her medical misfortune. We must be patient and allow Barnes to build the program up from the foundation. His four signed recruits have impressive credentials. And he has received commitments from two juniors for 2015-16, an unprecedented accomplishment for any YSU sport. Again, let's be patient. This is still one sport that, for the long term, I feel good about.
