YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU CROWDS
« on: October 03, 2016, 08:24:36 AM »
There were some very good and accurate points made about our crowds and attendance in the post about the game vs South Dakota.  Not only was it a small crowd, no energy and as I looked around near my seats, many of the fans were not even paying attention.  Many on their cell phones or chatting with friends.

I agree, the crowds of 20 K(and that didn't happen often under Tressel) are over.  Less people living in our community, and small student attendance at our games.  Also, all the replays make for long games, and there are so many good games on television.  Honestly, I was bored at our game on Saturday.

I know this is nothing new, but the conference we play in doesn't help, no geographic rivalry and fans could care less about who we play.

I also think FCS football is at an all time low.  Most, if not all the great programs of the 1990's are now in FBS.  There is no way one team should win 5 years in a row, and likely 6 straight titles.

Strollo is a dud, and doesn't have it in him to do something..   Also, even if we win Saturday, the crowd for UNI will be relatively small for a 'big' game.   We probably will be going head to head with Ohio State at Wisconsin, and although many hate to admit it, that is a factor.  Instead of being stubborn, we should move our game to 3 PM if the Ohio State game is an 8 pm start.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: NDSU a Top 25 team?

1-AA you are delusional.   North Dakota State has two wins over quality FCS programs, and beat a ranked Big 10 team on the road, and you call them antiquated?  Then Alabama is antiquated as well.

Nothing wrong with lining up and running over the opponent, which is what they did to Iowa.  When they need to throw they can, and their skilled talent is exceptional.   Good backs and quality wide receivers.

YSU had made the playoffs once in 15 years, and you defend them; but blast the most successful program in the history 1-AA and FCS football.

Our scheduling sucks, until athletic department shows me I am wrong, we are afraid to play quality FCS opponents outside of conference.

Look at UNI, back to back weeks Montana and Eastern Washington; ND State played Eastern Washington and Charleston.  We play two scrimmages.   And they wonder why fans don't show up.

Optimistic is one thing, but from the comments on this board, you guys make it sound like we are playing a Division 3 school.  There is a reason we are a 25 point underdog.   The guys in Vegas making the line know what they are doing.

West Virginia manhandled Missouri, which is an SEC team.  We have yet to prove anything,  don't get too overly excited about beating a team from the NEC.

I think Penguin Nation's post nailed it.   I heard MyYTV and YSU had a falling out, usually these things are about money.  But I agree, liked the replay.

Our schedule is pathetic and a failed attempt by Ron Strollo to secure a playoff berth, how has that worked out the past decade?   Many fans don't want to come see a scrimmage and that is what we are doing my playing the two NEC teams.   I hear Strollo always wants 6 home games, sad.    Look at who North Dakota State and Northern Iowa schedule, quality FCS teams that we should be playing.

Maybe one sure win, but not two.   If you can't beat the good FCS teams in a home and home scheduling, then you are probably not good enough to make the playoffs anyway.

Agree with the above post on the Illinois State and Northern Iowa games.   I want to be optimistic, I am going 8-3 and host a playoff game.   We won't beat West Virginia and probably lose at ND State.  I think we can win 2 of 3 vs Northern Iowa, Illinois St, and South Dakota State.  I can't imagine Illinois State can be close to what they were the past two years, they lost all their skilled talent.

YSU Penguin Athletics / LEE WRIGHT/THIS SEASON
« on: August 31, 2016, 08:36:52 AM »
I listened to the radio show Monday on !390, and read the paper today.  It appears Lee Wright is done for the year, and I do agree he should be suspended.  But this is a big blow to our defense, he is our best LB.

But listening to Carl Pelini on the show, he says our defense should be dominating and we have the two best defensive ends he has ever coached.

With 24 teams making the playoffs, and likely 5 from our league, how can we not be a playoff team?  17 seniors, two great backs, a defense with potentially 4 players who are being looked at by the NFL.

I think the only way this season doesn't end in the playoffs is if we don't find a quarterback who is just adequate, he doesn't need to be great, or even good.

Both will be on 2016 roster, Lee Wright will start.  This is a program that allowed Carl Pelini to return and coach, no other program in the country would have hired him.

With one playoff berth in 15 years there is a tremendous pressure for this team to win.  Loaded guns will not be an issue.

WKBN radio, 570 doing a YSU broadcast tomorrow at 7:30 til 9.  But Dan Rivers said today there is no game, more of a scrimmage.

Profit margin on athletics is a little misleading.  They would have been in the red had it not been for Ohio State having to pay YSU a buyout of a game we had scheduled with them this year.  So, really we had two money payouts, Pitt and Ohio State.

WICK250 great stuff.   The column in the Vindicator today is a joke.   Whether you liked Joe Scalzo or not, he would have come after the YSU administration for keeping Slocum.

It's official, Slocum to return for another season.  Hard to believe, but true.

Slocum another double digit loss.  Now 4-12 tournament record.  But Tressel and Strollo plan to bring him back.  Pathetic.

YSUGO, I think you are correct.   I was at the Poland vs Salem game last night, and two people who likely would know told me that Slocum will return, and that it is Tressel who saved him.

This is very disappointing, and the message from YSU is we don't care about men's basketball!  I honestly don't believe any other D-1 program in the country would allow this to continue.  Slocum has been a failure.

He is 23-0 at teams Like Thiel, Geneva, and Westminster, I don't see other D-1 programs playing this many D-3 opponents, his record is awful even with those wins.  His tournament record is 4-11, which is a .267 winning percentage,    His conference regular season record is 52-136, which is a .277 winning percentage. I could go on and on, but how can any athletic administration justify this.

I know the spin will be Bobby Hain's injury, when did Bobby Hain become Larry Bird?????  Also many of Slocum's losses this year were not competitive losses, so it would not have mattered if Hain would have played.

This team had multiple 30 plus point losses.  Even more concerning should be the lack of interest in the program.  THE UIC game had maybe 300 people.

He also treats people like garbage, I hear only Robb Schmidt in the athletic department likes him.  I sincerely believe that Strollo may be afraid of him, I am serious.

He has no impact in the community, other than YSU mandated events, you never see him.

YSU men's basketball is D-1 in name only.  John Robic's overall record and conference record were better than Slocum, and he got fired after 6 years.

1AA Fan I respect you, but you are so off base on this one.  Let Slocum pick his successor is laughable.  He is around 80 games under .500, we have lost games this year by more than 50 once, and twice more than 30, and countless other blow outs.

What has he done in 11 years to show any improvement in the program.  He needs to go, all his assistants need to go, the entire marketing department should go.

The game at home vs UIC, there may have been 200 people there.  The program is at an all time low.   He looks miserable, and whats scary, from what I hear, he thinks he is doing a good job.   He has no clue.

As for a job as Assistant AD, he can join Rick Love and Robb Schmidt, and the rest of that creative marketing team.
