YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU MEN'S BASKETBALL OFFICIALLY DEAD
« on: February 15, 2016, 02:37:48 PM »
Many good points made in the post above    It is accurate that Strollo was ready to hire Dean Hood as football coach, and he was indeed fired by Eastern KY at the end of this past year.  Hood would have set our program back years.

The comment that our basketball program is 'really good' is ridiculous.   As for hiring Wernicki, that is delusional.  What program fires the head coach because the program is in shambles, then hires his top assistant?   That makes no sense.

Agree as well that we need someone who has no ties to the program.  McFadden would be a likely candidate, only he can decide if the blueprint that is in place at Akron can be successful here.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU MEN'S BASKETBALL OFFICIALLY DEAD
« on: February 15, 2016, 08:32:41 AM »
WOW!   We have lost our last three men's basketball games, all at home, and not one post here!  What is worse that someone talking bad about you?   When no one is talking about you at all.

This is a site of loyal YSU fans, probably the most loyal in our valley, and yet no BB talk.

I am one of those who still can't believe Slocum is employed as our coach.  His record is awful, he has not engaged the community, and he looks miserable.   How can Strollo and Tressel continue to let this go on and on?

Although Tressel is one of the greatest coaches of all time, and looks to be on his way to being a great President.  He had very mixed results in hiring coaches as athletic director.  He hired John Robic, probably because Larry Brown and John Calipari gave the basketball program money to do so.

YSU basketball fans deserve more.  We haven't had a conference competitive team since Dan Peters was coaching us in the Mid Con.

Very sad.

I think someone like Ricky McFadden is the way go. Younger, up and coming assistant from a winning program.   But I don't think you just give him the job because he is from here.   This is a Division 1 program, let's look at all options.

Slocum has to be done, but I don't think he will go out on his own.   He is delusional, if you ask him, he is doing a good job.   Arrogant, rude with the media, and he has never embraced this community and made positive connections with fans and local coaches.

I am not sure Strollo has it to fire him. but Tressel does, and he will make it happen.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Pelini To Michigan?
« on: December 03, 2015, 09:45:06 AM »
With DJ Durkin being named the new head coach at Maryland, Michigan is looking for a defensive coordinator.  I would not be surprised if Pelini's name comes up.

This is just my opinion, but listening to Pelini, I am not certain he wants to be at YSU.  Seems stunned by the lack of fan support, and even commented on the radio show about the lack of fans at road games, almost stunned about the lack of interest in FCS football.   I do think Pelini will be the coach at YSU next year, but I do think Michigan may reach out.

John Heacock is your classic great assistant and coordinator, bad head coach.  He is a follower, not a leader.  Never comfortable dealing with all the other parts of being a head coach; media, fans, boosters, public appearances, speaking and so on.  But is very good in a dark room looking at video and putting together a great defensive game plan.   Not a criticism, just a fact.

As for why players go to MAC schools over YSU, it is Division 1 FBS, you get to play on national TV, the MAC has a weeknight ESPN package, you get to play in bowl games.   As for attendance, we don't draw much better, and we played two road games this year with less than 250 people.

Agree with all four, where is the accountability?   But I also agree, Tressel's loyalty to Strollo is an issue and he probably won't pull the trigger and fire him.

Probably same record, maybe 6-5.  Defense small improvement under Bo, offense step backwards, and although Kennedy was great, special teams not good under Bo or Wolf.

YSU Penguin Athletics / YSU PROGRAM VS WESTERN ILLINOIS PROGRAM
« on: November 23, 2015, 12:14:38 PM »
Western Illinois facilities are a joke, YSU state of the art, small fan base, our fan base much larger, but shrinking quickly.   YSU commits so much more to football, yet WIU make the playoffs.

Here is one big reason they made the playoffs at 6-5, their pre conference schedule vs #1 Coastal Carolina and a close loss, and a big win vs #25 Eastern Illinois, both are playoff teams;  their money game was Illinois.

YSU continues to schedule stiffs prior to league play and it hurting the program.  Had YSU beaten Indiana State, they still would have been left out, zero quality wins, WIU had three quality wins against ranked and playoff teams.

Strollo's philosophy of beating up on Valparasio, Butler, and so on is not a good one.   Our program is almost dead, lack of interest, bad conference for fan interest, lack of success.

YSU  has no business being in the playoff conversation.  Strength of schedule only a factor, if you beat some or at least one of those good teams.  Who did we beat?   What is our signature win?  We don't have one.  Beat a bunch of bad teams.

Been this way for a decade, his teams play no defense, he is miserable, looks miserable, and all we hear are excuses.   But the athletic administration seems to be fine with this.   and so it goes.....

I do agree with Lakebison, winning 9 games at Nebraska is very similar to John Heacok and Eric Wolford winning 7-8 games at YSU, and both got fired.   Nebraska plays and FCS team, which is an automatic win, YSU plays 2-3 stiffs each year as well.

Heacock and Wolford didn't win the big games and just one playoff berth between them.  Pelini beat the bad teams in the Big 10, but never won the Big 10 title and no FBS bowl games.  Unfortunately in most of the big games at Nebraska his team blown out.

This year, he lost three big conference games at home, and event lost to a bad Southern Illinois team.  He will get 6 wins, but again no big wins.

Whats disappointing is 24 is a lot of playoff teams, just beat SIU and in playoffs without beating a good team.

ALso, do you see any other coaches, either FCS or FBS carry on during the game like him?  Some here seem to be proud of his behavior,  I think is embarrassing and will cost us a game at some point.  He really does need anger management.  A true leader doesn't behave like that.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: QB Thread

Some here are delusional, Montgomery to a higher level program and take Wells with him.  Montgomery has done nothing here.  In big games his teams can't run the ball.   What happened against South Dakota State.  Wells has not progressed at all, might have gone backwards, where is this QB guru Montgomery is supposed to be.  If Montgomery is so good, why is he lingering here for 6 years?

Wells throws a pick 6 every week, not only can he not run, he scared of contact.  Didn't Montgomery get fired as head coach at Miami Ohio?  fired as asst at Akron?   What has he done?

In games against equal or better talent, our offense falls on its face.  Let's see if he proves me wrong Saturday.

Many great points and a good discussion here under this topic.  We have an entire generation of fans who only know mediocre football, for some, 1997 or even 1999 was a long time ago.   The student fan base is small, and we are an aging community, where many can't or won't go sit at a football game for 3 hours.  Realistic expectation for attendance with a good team should be 10-12 thousand.

As for QBS, Ricky Davis is a D-2 QB, period.   Pelini wants a QB who can also run, Wells cannot, so I do believe next years QB is not on the roster.

Neither Wells or Davis will be the quarterback next year.   Pelini will find a quick fix transfer who can throw and run, then begin grooming a quarterback to his liking.   Listen closely to Pelini, it drives him crazy that Wells is soft and not only cannot run, he is scared.
