YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Playoff Outlook
« on: November 10, 2015, 02:32:51 PM »
6-5 without a quality win, don't deserve to be in.   6-5 and a quality league win or strong non-conference win, then maybe an outside shot.  Need to stop scheduling 2-3 stiffs every year before league play begins.

Agree completely with the previous post.  I hope I am wrong, but YSU is going to struggle to move the ball.  We need turnovers, a great defensive effort, and maybe a special teams score to win.  We haven't beaten a team with a winning record, no quality wins, and now we face the 4 time defending champs.  ND State may not be what they once were, but they are still very good.

They went into SD State and dominated a team that overwhelmed YSU.  It seems when they have to turn it up, they do.  Also the Bison are playing for homefield, and conference title, and potential bye in the first round.  What am I missing here?

Bam no longer with the program, during the broadcast of the game vs Western Illinois, Hannon said it several times on air.  Also last night on radio show, Pelini said Eisenhuth doubtful for Saturday.

Have to agree with Paladin on this one, YSU men's basketball is a joke under Slocum, and no one in the athletic department seems to care.  He is 72 games under .500 as head coach at YSU and he keeps his job.  It is nauseating to hear all the excuses why we can't win here.

And again this year two D-3 opponents, Thiel and Geneva.

Southern Illinois is bad, their defense among the worst in the nation, and potentially their best defender out the first half because of a targeting incident last week.

This needs to be a convincing win.

YSUGO great post.   Our defense is very average at best.  Our defensive line in every game except St Francis gets pushed around.   We give up huge chunks of yardage in the run game every week.  Allow too many big plays.  Our corners are awful, this Kenneth Durden is a joke.  You watch the corners from South Dakota State, thats how you play, in fact their entire secondary played as a unit and together.

Way to early in the Pelini era, but I said when hired and I say now, he is not the answer.  In most of his big games at Nebraska, his defense was embarrassed, games at Wisconsin and Ohio State were not competitive.   A Wisconsin running back once ran for over 400 yards on his defense.  Not going to rehash Pelini hire, it is done.  But his 9 wins at Nebraska, very similar to Heacock and Wolford winning 6-8 at YSU, and both got fired.   You have 2-3 lock wins each year when you play the teams we do before conference play begins.

I am disappointed in the lack of progress of Wells, especially since Montgomery built him to be the next great QB here.   Maybe Montgomery is the problem as well.  Our offense is predictable and good teams shut us down.

Right now we are an average team, average program.  I also think Pelini needs to quit whining about the fans,  what we have seen the last two weeks, can you blame them for not coming.  Also, big picture, most games at the FCS level are played in front of 5-8 thousand fans, we are where we should be.  Even with a winning program maybe 12-14 thousand fans,  but we need a reality check.  FCS football is regional, and maybe even local interest.   Other than ND State with ESPN exposure, most could care less and would prefer to stay home at watch a good game on TV.

Because there are 24  teams in a watered down playoff, and just about the great FCS programs have made the jump to FBS, there will be some not so good teams in the playoffs, and we could be one of them.  Appy State, Georgia Southern, Troy, Nevada, Marshall, and the list goes on, have all moved to FBS.  We may be the lone one not stepping up.  And if we had the money, and they would take us, we would be in the MAC.

YSU Penguin Athletics / PELINI RADIO SHOW
« on: October 06, 2015, 08:16:32 AM »
I listened last night, and a few interesting comments.   Pelini was very outspoken on his disappointment the first two games with the lack of a big crowd and overall interest in the program.  He didn't shy away from saying how disappointed he has been.

Hannon tried to get him to admit this is a very big game, his first real test in the conference against an explosive offense, but Pelini kept saying its just the next game.  But to regain the fan base and some swagger with this program, we need this one.

Also it appears Strickland done for the year, but rather mysterious as to why and what he did.   He is a big loss.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Where was Trevor Strickland?
« on: October 05, 2015, 08:04:34 AM »
Watched the entire game, Strickland, our best lineman never played. Went back and watched again, and I was correct never on the field.

TV broadcast was awful with road announcers, they never addressed it.  He is our left tackle, critical backside tackle to protect QB blindside.  Anyone know if he is hurt or another issue?   He would be a big loss.

Two different issues we are talking about here.  The first is the lack of success in basketball is on Slocum.  I don' t think any other division 1 program in the country would have let this disaster go on this long.  Sad thing is I hear the powers at YSU think Slocum is doing a good job, his performance is pathetic.

Second issue is Ron Strollo failing to address the issue and fire this stiff.   Also, when Butler left the Horizon League become a much lesser conference.    No reason to be in or near the basement every year.

Not even sure to begin with Strollo's son,  saw him play in high school and likely would be a very good fit at a Division 3 school like Mt. Union.   But if he gets any significant playing time at YSU we are worse than I thought.   I can't imagine that there is pressure from above to play him, and i really can't believe Slocum would let that happen.  I am no fan of Slocum. but Strollo's kid would not be able to play D-2, let alone here.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Assistant Coaches
« on: February 24, 2015, 08:25:14 AM »
I hope Bo wins, and I am supportive.  But I agree with the last two posts.  Hiring Bo was controversial, the guy needs need anger management support.  Then the assistant who bashes gay and lesbians, not smart at a public school in 2015.  But nothing awful here.

But Carl Pelini is no good, fired because of drugs, and allegations of partying with students.   Surprised President Tressel is going to let this happen.   And why do so many here think he is this great coach?  What has he done to get this praise.

You must be delusional to think Slocum is doing a good job.  YSU is one of the worst men's basketball programs in the country.  It is sickening to hear that money is keeping us from being better.   The expectation is win a second round tournament game every so often, we are not expecting a berth in the conference title game or NCAA bid.  Although you would think after a decade he would have been able to pull an upset or two in the conference tournament.  It never happens.

Our program is a joke, and it is accepted.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Pelini vs. Wolf vs. Heacock vs. Tressel

Not trying to make any point, just stating the facts.   Agree, only job he was fired from, and it was his only head coaching job of his career, just stating the facts.   Yes, he will beat the cupcakes on our schedule, Heacock and Wolford did that.   Time will tell if he can beat the elite programs in our league.

It isn't all that difficult to make the playoffs in FCS, 24 teams get in, and that is really all YSU fans are asking for.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Pelini vs. Wolf vs. Heacock vs. Tressel
« on: January 28, 2015, 02:01:27 PM »
Tressel was one of a kind, there is only one, and we will never experience that kind of run again.   Heacock took over a great program and it quickly became just average;  1 playoff berth in nine years, and 0-9 vs Northern Iowa.

Wolford, although the style much different that Heacock, was the same.   No playoffs, and couldn't win in November.

The grade on Pelini is incomplete.  I would grade him a C- at Nebraska.  No BCS bowl appearances, and several awful blowout losses.   I don't want to hear about the 9 wins a year, a monkey at Nebraska should win 7 games playing Northwestern, Indiana, Illinois, and Rutgers every year, and throw in a couple of stiffs like McNeese State prior to league play.   This past year Nebraska barely beat McNeese, and also played Fresno State and Florida Atlantic in the preseason.

Also, short temper and unprofessional behavior is not a positive, even though some on this board think that kind of behavior is acceptable.

This time around I agree with Paladin and Let's talk.   Ron Stoops showed me nothing as linebackers coach.  And is this a Mooney guy taking care of another Moony guy?  Stoops for the past several years was part of a defense that couldn't get off the field.

Yes, what happened here in the 1990's is once in a century, the goal should be a playoff team.  Dominating like we did won't happen again in  our lifetime.  Enjoy the memories and what Coach Tressel did.

North Dakota State is enjoying that kind of run right now.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Could we please fire Slocum now
« on: January 16, 2015, 11:01:08 AM »
All very good points in above posts.  Slocum has been a failure, but my concern is that I hear the powers at be think he is doing a good job.  Are the expectations so low for men's basketball, that YSU accepts this?   We hold football coaches to a very high level of accountability, but not basketball?

I understand football is the lead program, but how can they justify keeping Slocum.  I have several issues with the guy.   He hasn't won  is the big one, and we haven't even sniffed an Horizon League title.

Forget about winning the tournament, make it to the semifinals once.   My other issues are that he looks miserable, sounds miserable, and appears to me that he is just bitter.  Also, I think as a head coach you need to be visible in the community, is the guy ever out at about at major community events??????

Also, I think his staff is weak.  He has two assistant coaches with him from day one.  If either were any good they would have moved on, they can't get better jobs.

I really believe though YSU will Slcoum to call his shot, and retire on his terms.  Very sad.
