No winner in Wolford’s blame game

Published: Fri, November 9, 2012 @ 12:00 a.m.

A football coach gets hired at the local university. When he sits down at his desk the first time, he finds three envelopes in the top drawer, with a note from the previous coach saying, “If things get tough, open them one at a time.”

So, the first year, the coach goes 3-8. He opens the envelope and it says, “Blame me! Tell everyone I let the program deteriorate and it’s going to take some time to rebuild.”

The new coach does. The next year, he goes 2-9. So he opens the second envelope and it says, “Blame the media! They’re too negative! How can you be expected to turn the program around when recruits keep reading about how bad things are going?”

So he does. The next year, the coach goes 3-8. So he opens the third envelope and it says, “Prepare three envelopes.”

It’s an old joke, but it’s a timely one this week. After taking the first approach in his first 21/2 years, Wolford switched to the second envelope at Tuesday’s press conference, criticizing reporters for presenting a “doom and gloom atmosphere” that has led to lower attendance at Stambaugh Stadium.

Criticizing the media is usually a good strategy — in sports or in politics — but this one was a head-scratcher. Wolford has enjoyed overwhelmingly positive coverage through most of his tenure, despite a 14-17 record that includes a 7-15 mark in conference games.

This season, the Penguins went from being ranked No. 3 in the country in late September to squeaking out a three-point victory over South Dakota (1-8) at home in early November. As one reporter said after Tuesday’s press conference, “What does he expect?”

Listen. While there are plenty of people who want Wolford fired yesterday, I’m not one of them. Barring a catastrophe next season, he deserves the chance to fulfill his five-year contract. But criticizing the media for “doom and gloom” is ridiculous.

Before the season, he said anything short of the playoffs would be a failure. That was his standard, which he repeated two weeks ago. So here’s the bottom line: If you set the high jump bar at 7 feet, don’t complain when the media isn’t impressed with a 5-foot jump. And if you want to use the media to criticize the previous coach’s program — which Wolford has — don’t be shocked when that same media criticizes yours.

Two weeks ago, I got an email from an area coach I respect. He lamented that Wolford “has never taken any responsibility whatsoever for the team’s demise.” He pointed to a quote from Penn State’s first-year coach, Bill O’Brien, who said this after a loss to Ohio State: “I could have adjusted better. I could have had a better game plan.”

Since Wolford is giving me advice about how to better do my job, here’s some for him: Show more humility. Take more blame. Even if you don’t believe what you’re saying, say it anyway. People like reading it.

Like any job, there’s a learning curve to being a head coach. This is the third year of a five-year process. He’ll figure it out.

And if he doesn’t? Well, his biggest problem won’t be what’s in the papers.

It’ll be what’s in that third envelope.

Pizza,  what an absolutely perfect comment.  I've been looking for those exact words for weeks now and always succumbed to my anger.  But you posted exactly what I was feeling.

I would really like to know the answer, I think most would be very surprised at the number of kids who choose not to run thru that wall.

Great Post!!!!!!

There should all out QB competition next year.  Sorry Kurt, you've lost IT and I don't think it's coming back bud.  Please Eric, Shane grow some balls and make a QB change now.  Let's see what Angle can do

Eric Wolford you are a complete idiot.  This is the last thing you expected today?  Really, REALLY.  What's different this week from last week or the week before or the week before that?  Dude, you are truly clueless.  Please PLEASE hand in your resignation letter tomorrow morning.  I just got off the train with that comment.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Eric Wolford: The Third Year

YSUGO....I don't believe anyone here is jumping ship just yet.  But let's be honest, the majority of what you're reading now is absolutely true.  Sure, winning is a nice band aid for all the problems that this team really has.  And we are all starting to witness teams now catching up with those weaknesses on the offense.  The defense??? Everyone knows it has been an achilles heal for nearly 3 years now.  It's been clearly noted several times now by Coach Wolford, we're WAY more talented and we have WAY more  depth.  Special teams???  Do they even exist????  No, I don't think so and I'm not just talking about the problems with the coverage side of it.  He doesn't even trust his kickers enough to give them a shot at SOME points.

At the end of the day, we have all this talent and depth in all 3 facets.  Yet, we lose the same way.  An offense who has to constantly outscore the opponent.  And now, defenses are learning how to shut down that potent offense.  Who's problem is that????  It has to fall on the head coach.  He's the man, he's the boss.  This program's previous coach (and I admit that I was his harshest critic) was lambasted year in and year out for lack of talent and creativity.  The talent is here, where is the creatvity or should I say the brains to adjust throughout a game.  It doesn't exist.  Did you listen to the ISU (R) coach after the game.....he wrote down on paper throughout the second half the adjustments that were needed and made immediately.  YSUs coaches haven't learned that after 3  years.  Hell, they don't even make the necessary adjustments at the half.

As much as I would love YSU to be a great a football team and make the playoffs every year.  I just don't see it happening and especially this year.  I don't want to see them get embarrassed  in the playoffs.  This coaching staff as a whole is just not ready for the big time.  And at some point, the boss has to take a long look in the mirror and ask himself one simple question.  And I'm in control of this program??? If so, then take control.

Ok, my train has stopped.  :)

"When is the last time you heard fans not want to make the post-season because they are afraid to be embarrassed?"

+1,000,000

313
"The offense was shut down from good DL play.  We were not able to pick up the blitz and the receivers could not get open before Hess could get the ball off.  As a result Hess was on the run and his accuracy is much worse while on the run. Where are the adjustments on offense?"

According to Coach Wolford, we're not built for that either.  hahahahhahahah

314
Soooooo, let's see here.  SIU beat ISU (R) and YSU plays SIU next week.  And NDSU loses to ISU (B) and we've to play them.  Oh yeah and theres SDSU yet.  We have a real shot at losing 3 more games this year.  What happens if that scenario plays out and we lose?  I think you have to now start asking for Wolford's dismissal.  What a HUGE disappointment this coaching staff has become.

315
WOW.....and Indiana State goes out and beats #1 NDSU.  Crap, we still have to play them yet too
