YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: University of Akron
« on: April 26, 2020, 01:23:54 PM »
Akron was a mess before COVID, and they are worse off than the others.  But, every state school is getting crushed, including YSU.  Athletics will take a hit, likely layoffs, and potential coaching layoffs, I am talking assistants.

YSUGO good job, needed this with all the boredom in my life.

1. I think 1994 was our best overall team.  I would take that team on all levels, Shawn Patton was such a talented running back.
2. Best game is tough, 1991 miracle win over Villanova in round 1 of the playoffs, it was the beginning of the dynasty.
3. Herb Williams catch in 1991 playoff win over Villanova, it was a 4th down play and if he doesn't make that reception, game over.
4. Marshall, the stadium and atmosphere in 1992 and 1993.
5. Western Illinois, not even close.
6. Steve McNair.
7. Hannon and Muransky, good chemistry together.
8. In a perfect world the MAC, but we don't have the money.  Would be best for all sports.
9. The way we market our programs, right now it is pathetic and there is no creativity and innovation.

The Univ Of Washington projection is if the entire nation practices social distancing through at least May.  if it were not for social distancing that figure would be at least 10 times higher than the 60,000.

So if the country were to return to normal, at minimum, and this is a low projection, there would be 600,000 deaths from this virus.   That is more than a common cold.  Yet some think we should fill up Ohio Stadium in September with 100,000 fans.

Penguinpower you are ignorant.  A healthy 53 year old man died this week in Poland.  Even with social distancing as many as 100,000 people likely will die.  Then it won't be over until there is a vaccine or cure.

You can't put thousands of people in a stadium to watch a game, that is insanity with a virus that spreads like this one.   In the big picture, college football is meaningless.  Even if they play football, there will be no fans in the stadium.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Q declares for the NBA draft

He will likely be back at YSU.  If he has a future as a pro, it is in Europe.  Wick250 is right, he has no shot to play in the NBA.

Q is a very good player, but he would struggle in a major conference.  The 41 point night vs Wright State was one we all will remember, but two days later against Northern Kentucky he couldn't make a shot.

As for basketball donors, you can start with one of the assistant coaches father, who has deep pockets and has well connected wealthy friends.  Basketball has a long way to go, but is on the rise.  If we are serious about basketball, now is the time.

We are going to be a conference contender the next two years, and most of us believe we finally have the right coach.  Wright State and Northern KY have amazing facilities and a commitment to basketball.  My concern is that our athletic department does not know how to do this, Strollo and his crew are pathetic.  It would have to be led by outside community leaders who are committed to upgrading Beeghly.

I'll be the first to admit if proven wrong, but football is dead.  We are banking on a 52 year old journeyman coach, who recently was out of football for 8 years, and his claim to fame is being a running backs coach.  That is fact.  Also fact is that the job was bought for him.  I know this is beating a dead horse, BUT, he wasn't top 3 after the interviews in Canton.  His staff is not impressive.  I'll be rooting for him. However, I don't see this turning around.  Heacock, Wolford, and Pelini couldn't do it, but Phillips can?  I don't think so.

Basketball the way to go.

This will take time, and the timing couldn't be worse.  With the country in crisis, this all likely will be put on hold.  Even those with the resources in the community to support are taking a beating right now.

Correct Chief on Baker, off to LSU.  Youboty was an analyst at Wisconsin, making little money.  That is why he was here.   Agree on this staff,  so much youth and inexperience.   Phillips won't admit this, but this will take awhile to fix even if he is the right guy.

All this coronavirus stuff does put on hold those in the transfer portal, maybe Reed will stay.

NBA players are testing positive, and you guys are worried about basketball games.  Especially meaningless CBI and CIT games.   The NCAA Tournament will cancel, likely this weekend.  How can you put people on plans and in arena's to play basketball games.

There is no way there were more than 84 thousand fans at football games, that is a joke.  The Western Illinois game and Illinois State easily less than 1000 fans.

We are a football town though, but shrinking population, and the younger people in general don't come to YSU games.  They prefer to stay home and watch big time FBS football.  Not sure we ever consistently drew more than 15 thousand fans.  September games, even against bad teams draw better, probably because of the better weather conditions are more appealing to be outside.

I remember playoff games with well less than 10 thousand fans.

YSU has accepted to play in the CIT post season tournament.  They have also bought the first two games and will host next Wednesday, March 18th and again on the 21st if we win the opener.  It would be great to host a MAC school.

How much longer will Coach Calhoun be at YSU?  With the team in position to be potentially 1st or 2nd the next two years, and if somehow he could get to the NCAA tournament, then I think 2 years at most.   I know he likes it here.  But his goal is a big time job.  In my opinion, he has it all to someday be in the big time.

Chief gets ripped for being objective and stating his opinion.  Actually much of what he says is fact.  The current state of the football program is irrelevant.  In general, FCS football is irrelevant.

We have been average at best for two decades, and now a 52 year old coach who was no more than a running backs coach at Cincinnati is the savior?  With a coaching staff that has little or no experience at this level.  I get he is doing all the right things in the community, that means little if he can't win.  Had Bo produced a perennial playoff team then it wouldn't have mattered that he is a bully and did no community outreach.

Basketball is the rising star program.  The concern would be that Wright State and Northern KY invest a lot more money in basketball than YSU and have much better facillities.  That is hard to overcome, but we do have a great young coach in Calhoun.

I don't want to beat on Waid, but the post that he played well against North Dakota State is laughable.  He came  in when we were down by 40, and faced their JV team.

Go Guins, how is it obvious that Mark Waid can play?  He was redshirted last year, and his only playing time of significance was against Illinois State, we won that game by running the ball and great defense.  His only other offer was Fordham, and that is not exactly a football powerhouse.

Again, I repeat we lost league games by 25, 35, and 39 points.   Look at the teams above of us rosters, all young, except for Illinois State which had a huge senior class.

South Dakota beat us by 35, and they return 14 starters, they do need to find a QB, and Hero Sports had them with a top ten recruiting class.  UNI, South Dakota State, and UNI are loaded.  Southern Illinois got screwed out of a playoff berth.  They won 5 straight and won their last five, and beat us by 25;  and by the way 16 starters return.

Yes Phillips doing all the right things in the community, that doesn't translate to wins.  Were were 2-6 in the conference!  This is a rebuild for Phillips, not a reload.

Don't think Chief is being negative or a hater, but realistic.  How can anyone say we are ahead at QB over last year.  Craycraft is very average, and Waid is unproven.  I hope Waid emerges as a star.

Also, the non-conference schedule is much tougher this year. Yes, I know Akron may have been the worst team in FBS last year, but they are FBS, and likely will be improved.

YSU has so many question marks, beginning at coaching.  Phillips and his staff may emerge as the real deal, but I am not feeling it.

In the hunt for what?  Last year's team was 2-6 in the conference.   Even if Phillips is the answer, this will take time.  Look at the top teams in our conference, all are young, and now we add North Dakota.   Patience is going to be needed with an almost completely new staff.  I am pleased that Phillips moved on from all these Mooney coaches.
