YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Basketball Coach Jibber Jabber

Does the media ever ask coach why the program isn't successful ?   Are they intimidated ?        During last nights game one of the commentators spoke to Slocum off camera and asked about the up and down play and coach said that the team is so young and wasn't sure what he'll get each night.    I agree with Slocum that they are young and this team has potential down the road but why are we so young ?    In the last two seasons how many players have left the program ?   Must be at least 6-7 and if that continues YSU will always be starting from scratch unless he's bringing in juco which sometimes is just a band aid to a bigger problem.

Saw Keene, Stewart, Vaughn, and Plummer transfer last year...wonder if or how many we lose to transfers this year.
Losing Keene and Weber the year before has hurt the program.   I hope the exodus stops and doesn't cost a Cam or Andrews.

Sad and embarrassing to watch.  The espn3/Valpo announcers were very sympathetic towards the Penguins.
I got to wonder if Bobby and ulmude were healthy would we be competitive ?  Feel sorry for Cam.

Down 43-26 at half.  Cam has 15 and no one else has stepped up.  Didn't see the stats but we have at least 13 turnovers.   The Slocum 2-3 zone is like a girl that you date who everyone sees as ugly but you.

We're getting destroyed.  63-39 with 13 minutes left   This team =bipolar.  No defense,no box out,no rebounding.
Cam is carrying us with 23 so far.

We are still 7-10 overall with some bad losses.  Still only think 5 or 6 conf wins at most.  Hopefully I am wrong but have to look at reality and how we always fall apart 2nd half of Horizon schedule every year.

IMOP the only real bad loss was to American.  We would beat them 8 out of 10 times.  The Michigan score was ugly and we're not that bad.  You may be right since there's a lot of Horizon league games to go.  Going forward can we expect our shooters to continue to put up big numbers ?   Must cut down on turnovers and need to COMPETE on the boards.

Anyone know how long Hain will be out ?    Is he a redshirt possibility ?   Are the writers from the Vindy allowed to ask ?

We gave up 20 offensive rebounds and had 17 turnovers.  Our bigs combined for 2 of 15 but Bryce Nickels had 10 rebounds.  Need some solid play down in the post from one of them with Bobby out.

Yes looked good. We tried top let them back in at the end, but caught ourselves.

We had a 20 point lead but never used the shot clock to our advantage.

Cameron Morse is worth the price of admission.   We should nick name him "the price".

One day you're sipping the wine the next day you're stomping the grapes.    The UWM game looked like one of Mike Tyson's early career fights where his opponent lasted about 43 seconds.  We looked like Geneva College.

This is a fragile team with Hain out and when Donlan and Andrews are off it makes for a long night.   The coaching staff has to get close out defense on 3 point shooters.  UWM had easy looks all night.

Morse was the bright spot once again.  Not sure why Jerry had him out so long in the 1st half when UWM went on their run.

Kauffman gave us a presence  in the middle.  His best effort as a Penguin.  Latin Davis was the point guard down the stretch and the true frosh played well on the road.  Donlan and Morse carried the scoring as expected but Jordan Andrews put on a shooting show until foul trouble took him out of the game.   Great team effort.

IAA fan.  I had season tickets from 1974 through 1978.  When we played Akron or Gannon the place was filled.   I think the capacity was 6000 and it was loud.   I could name and bore you with every player on those teams.  The lower levels were filled even when we played Kenyon or Steubenville.  There's no doubt(maybe i'm bias) that players like Frank Andrews,Gerald Parks and Tony Mitchell would be better than what our roster are today.

Youngstown had a larger population which might be a factor.   No one that I knew ever said a bad word about Coach Roselli.

This a a frustrating topic but facts are facts.  I want to cheer for Slocum.  He seems to be a decent man and I'm sure he wants to win more than all of us.  If we base his historical tenure on wins and losses it doesn't bode well for the future.  The best season was 2011-2012 which was 18-16 and a 6th place finish in the Horizon.
YSU is consistently in the bottom of the league and a couple of seasons in the middle.

The crowds are embarrassing at Beeghley.  The place was packed(not all games but many) in the 70s during the Jeff Covington era.

The exodus of players transferring out happens at a lot of schools but in our case losing Ryan Webber and Marcus Keene really hurt.  You cannot have that type of talent leave.  Starters who have top scoring potential.

Who do we blame ?
Slocum
AD
President
Budget
City of Youngstown

Should we be in a lesser conference than the Horizon ?

You can't be in last place year after year and then go to the middle of the pack and feel good about the program to then fall back to the bottom.  Someone has to be held accountable and the press has to ask the hard questions of why our men's program cannot compete for league titles.

Before I die (I'm 55) I would love the Penguins to win their conference and make the NCAA tournament.
Trust me there are a lot more important things in life than the YSU b-ball but it would sure be nice if we can make a name for our community on the hard wood.  If a depressed city like Detroit can have a competitive team than why not Youngstown ?
