YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: YSU MBB Axe 'Em Classic
« on: November 21, 2024, 03:07:27 PM »
I even looked on the event's website and nothing about TV is mentioned https://www.gazellegroup.com/main/axe-em-classic/

However if you look at host Stephen F. Austin's website https://sfajacks.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule it lists all the games and it shows ESPN+ for their games against Presby tonight & Monmouth tomorrow, but not YSU on Saturday.  The ESPN+ schedule shows the same thing.  Very weird!

Frustrating for us but not really a mystery. SFA has a home football game on Saturday.

You knew he was gone. I hope he dies well.  It obvious it’s Brungard or Bust!

Its Brungard or Bust and Phillips or Bust.  If he doesn't deliver Phillips will be GONE when the contract is up!

Next to the codes for the US nuclear arsenal, the length and details of Phillips' extension is the most closely guarded secret in America.

It would have been shocking if he had stayed. I hope that he lands someplace that will give him an opportunity.

Jayguin,

We must have been looking at two different teams. Our defense was pathetic. Good thing we are the national leader, or close to it, in time of possession. If we had an offense that could not move the chains, that defense would have given up 500 yards and 45+ points every game. Were there any legitimate DI players on that defense? Some of us could not see one.

If we retain those defensive coaches, we are doomed.

YSU Penguin Athletics / The Founder of this message board has died

A former poster has informed me that IAA Fan, the founder of this message board, passed away on November 1. Below is the information if you are interested:

https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/columbus-oh/daniel-crum-12058986

Whether you agreed with his stances on the issues, nobody could question his dedication to YSU and his financial commitment to promoting our sports through this board.

I would guess that this board has a fast-approaching expiration date. Perhaps the moderators could tell us more about that.

We will be there also but barely hanging on. This week doesn’t mean much, the following weeks will mean much more. Who is losing their job?  Who is leaving for the portal? Heard he is bringing 15 recruits to this game?? They will look up and see 500 people in the stands. Save your time and get 15 portal kids that can come in and play right now, we don’t have the time to develop kids anymore, besides when you develop them they will leave. Sound familiar? I think kids today understand the business of college football better than our program does. Nobody is safe year in and year out. If you want to play either work your ass off or find a level of college that you can play at and the portal does that. The best coaches today are the ones that can bring in new people that are starters and gel them together like they played together for years. Head coaches need to be like CEOs more than X and Os.  The portal changed college sports and as a coach you need to adapt to the changes. Cant be old school and coach like it’s the 90s.  He’s sold on BB so we won’t see another Qb for two more years which is a shame. After this debacle of a season nobody would be safe, from the parking attendant to the coaches.

Stick, you have offered a blueprint that could lead us out of this mess. Unfortunately, the powers-that-be (that is you, Ron) don't understand that being a "developmental program" is the formula for disaster in the climate of modern college football.

As for the UNI game, I dislike them so much that I am really trying to care. But I don't. That spectacle last week ended my emotional involvement with the Phillips' regime.

A question for those of you who follow basketball. Do any of our portal transfers have good reputations as outside shooters? Could the distance shooting in these first games just be an aberration? I sure hope so.

Does the school administration and trustees care enough to buy out the contracts? I highly doubt it. They have been crying poor since my brother played 25 years ago.

Here is how you can dump Phillips without breaking the budget. We have a small army of athletic administrators: an AD and seven people with titles of associate or assistant AD. And many more "directors' of this or that.

Scenario 1. Fire the foolish AD who gave the extension to the loser. Elevate one of the seven assistants to acting AD status. Use Strollo's salary to pay off Phillips for x number of years.

Scenario 2. Downsize 2 or 3 assistant/associate ADs (like we need them) and use that money to buy out Phillips.

Two feasible options. But at YSU it does not matter how bad programs are or how unhappy fans get. The priority is always to expand the number of worthless athletic (or for that matter academic) administrators that feed at the public trough.

Now how come the men's team lost all starters and still managed to win by 20 on the road against a d1 opponent.   Defense.  Yet the football team cannot even win one road game this year.  Mind boggling!

In addition to defense, there are a few more reasons.

A Head Coach & Staff who have embraced the transfer portal since day 1 rather than view it as a bad thing.

A Head Coach & Staff who know how recognize & recruit talent from any level (high school or portal)

A Head Coach & Staff who also had the foresight to realize that Name, Image and Likeness are the keys to attracting & retaining players.  Again, rather than viewing it as a bad thing.

Say what you want, but great thing about NIL is EVERYONE can have a true voice and directly impact the rosters by contributing to NIL.  If everyone on this board sent $50 or $100 to The Penguin Collective https://www.thepenguincollective.org/, DP will be in a better position to assemble his next roster - which is already happening.

As difficult as it is to step back from emotions of yesterday's football embarrassment, now is the time to step up with your wallet if you want a better football roster next year.  The alternative will simply be more of the same - or worse.

Basketball raised nearly double what football did in NIL for this season.  Using the last few seasons and the benchmark, it's easy to see why we are now a basketball school.

Although this was not your intention, you articulated well the compelling reason why Phillips must be dismissed. No donor will open his wallet for this loser.

Impressive defense. Commentators stated Chicago State went 7 minutes in each half without a field goal. Much better flow to the offense in the second half. We should be ok by the league schedule if we don't allow upcoming hard times on the road to retard development.

Women's BB coach Jackson finds quality players in the portal. Men's BB coach Faulkner finds quality players in the portal. FB coach Phillips fin.....never mind!

In his first year, Phillips found two future NFL players. But that was in the very early stages of NIL and completely before the idea of outright paying players. If you can not work the MODERN portal, you are a worthless coach. And Phillips can not work the modern portal.

Regardless of the ill-conceived extension, it has reached the point where the continuation of Phillips' tenure has become untenable. He won't resign. Nobody walks away from 300k. For the first time in YSU history, buying out a bad coaching contract has now become necessary to preserve what is left of interest in a once-proud football program. If we do not make the move, we stand to fall into an abyss from which there will be no recovery.

Someone on the game thread suggested a successful D2 coach as the replacement. I second that idea. Do you realize that since the time of Beede, Pelini has been the only person with prior head coaching experience hired for the job. We lucked out big time with Tressel, but everybody else failed. No more on the job training. A successful D2 coach with successful coordinators who would come with him is the sensible play.
