YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Portal Coming and Going

You knew he was gone. I hope he dies well.  It obvious it’s Brungard or Bust!

Obviously, 2024 was a disappointment. Here’s the obvious team as it was built cannot compete consistently to be a Conference contender for playoffs. Coach Phillips was hired to do this which she has not done. He claimed he was going to build a culture and we would see how Youngstown football used to be played and will be played Under his watch so far we haven’t seen that. Recruiting has been a problem at certain positions and defense has been in Achilles heal since a Heacock left. Yes Pelini had a year a too of decent D.  My guess is nobody’s getting fired that matters the A.D. is not going nowhere till he retires. Phillips has an extension and we have no money to get out of it..  I’m surprised the defensive coordinator has been fired already.  The defense was a mess and cost us what maybe three wins where we are in the game. As for the quarterback, I’m still not sold on him.  We got lucky this year. He didn’t get hurt earlier and that’s my point. We better find a decent back up because the odds are against our starter to not get hurt specially as much as he’s running. Is that what we really want need more than one guy to win in our conference we need players they can make a splash this year’s team, had more role role players. The other concern is how many guys are we gonna lose? I’m afraid we’re gonna lose our left tackle and maybe two wide receivers.  Everybody thinks we can fix this through the portal maybe we can but we still don’t have the money .  Just a few thoughts now more later.

2 teams with bad defenses today.  We did play better but we still look like a 3-4 win team.  Our D was constantly being fooled. Tick tick tick tick you’d hear that Philips

Disagree PenguinPower he is far from a good coach. He can’t recruit or get as D1 QB. Without even an average QB we can’t compete   Davidson was a walk on can’t remember if he came with Pelini.
We had the best RB in the country and even though we could see Crenshaw didn’t have it took him way too long to go to Davidson.
Yes we got to the playoffs but we got a break due to FCS rules to get a close team on the draw.
Same team beat us the following year why?
Then Pitt dropped 73 pts in us.  Those kids were not prepared had no fight in them.  Then he hugs the guy Narduzzi I guess it’s think you for the 400k.
Phillips has shown he and his staff cannot evaluate and recruit a division 1 defense period.
Or a D1 QB.  He’s mediocre at best. He’s as D+ version of a Jim Tressel hire.  If YSU can’t afford to compete it’s time to rethink where we are at. To say this 4th rate hire is a great shows how we have lowered our standards.

Penguinpower all points about NIL etc I made months ago thanks for solidifying what I said and most people ignored.
It comes down to money and what are the goals set by AD and administration.  With the current state of NIL we spend 4m plus a year if we added another 2 mill a year to retain players we develop and get quality coaches is it enough.
One thing isn’t fair with the nil transfer rule what needs to be done is if a school takes a quality player at our level the school should pay YSU a developmental fee.  Or say they offer one of our players 100k to leave we get a 15% surcharge or something.  The problem got is a power 5 school says hey look go to YSU and if you progress. We will take u 2 years later

Going back to Phillips I do t think he’s the guy for this. He knew he had a qb problem coming and the local guys are not it.  He got lucky that Davidson was here the last 2 years.

Again what’s the commitment does YSU want?  How do we resurrect a program that had become a dinosaur in FCS.
Strollo I feel time should end here are his higherd since Heacock Wolford Pelini and Phillips
Again without money and a big donors we are stuck.
Do we drop down to D2?  Do we change conferences? Can’t move up without major money!
One good thing Penguin Power Patty V is retiring as commissioner! After this year.

Pitt playing bored as they beat us up for homecoming.  I would have thought we would have seen the other QBs .  There still 10 minutes left. Our D lacks speed smarts and everything else.  Sad.

I started another thread about Brungard.  Look I’m not a coach but went and watched a lot of football.  I know Brungard is a legacy due to his father.  I know Brungard is a good athlete.  But I also know he doesn’t pass the eye test on mechanics etc. If they wanted him. To be THE guy then either you work in his mechanics the last 2 years or we needed. To change to an option if rpo offense this isn’t rocket science.  His receivers bailed him out with countless bad throws.
I know the D sucked last year but losing 10 guys is not sustainable will take this year and probably another year of recruiting.  Find a damn QB.

Where do you start?
Our QB has D1running mobility and a D3 arm
Our D- What D?
Coach Phillips right now you’re on the clock.  I’m sure you will get another year or 2 with we need to develop the D and we need a QB.
Crowd size-  beautiful day they were everywhere but YSU

I have said all along FCS is a joke do to who spends what and how they pick teams for the playoffs.  Some conferences are non scholly some don’t offer the full 65.  So we are in a league where we truly are at a disadvantage with travel and doesn’t fit and considered tbe best league
Valpo in a non scholly league put up 25 pts on us yesterday any guess what their football budget is?
There are 118 players on the Valpo men’s football team, and they are led by one head coach and 10 assistant coaches. The team’s academic progress rate of 956 is one sign of how well teammates do in the classroom.

The Valpo football program paid out $1,221,326 in expenses while making $1,272,347 in total revenue.
Youngstowns stats
The Youngstown State University men’s football team is made up of 121 players who, in turn, are trained and guided by a head coach and 12 assistant coaches. In terms of how well they perform in the classroom, the team has an academic progress rate of 956.

On the money side of things, the Youngstown State University football program brought home $4,230,772 in revenue and paid out $4,230,772 in total expenses

Thoughts through the 3rd quarter
No crowd no atmosphere it’s embarrassing as I watch it on TV.  I watching it because I live in Florida now
Defense is clueless.  One play the WR for Valpo was sooo wide open.  The color guy ion ESPN said Jesus!  When that played developed.
We should be working on our passing game . Not running in the second half. We are playing a non scholy team
Stupid just add Beau running here in the 4th
We spend what 3-4 million a year on Football vs what does  Valpo spend maybe a million.  They are getting way more bang for the buck
We still don’t know how to use timeouts.
Just watched Beau run again. Guess personal stats are more important than improving our passing game.
Not impressed.  I feel we are not preparing for our league schedule.  Time will tell

CIMO is right FCS is irrelevant.  The problem is all the old school fans think we are still in 90’s.  Plus us being in the prairie dog conference destroyed any momentum this program had from those ancient championships.  Kids want exposure and want to be D1 athletes. The MAC may be a bottom D1 but for exposure they have way more than 95% of FCS.  Now with NIL  teams like YSU will lose talent more then they can develop or acquire.  I have heard for 20 years how you all said the MAC was done.  Lol they are still kicking.  Strollo is alot to blame on this. He is a great bean counter but no vision on where of what direction our football team should be.  We can’t afford top assistants which was never addressed as long as I can remember.  If Phillips doesn’t last you would have to be an idiot to come here without the dollars to get good assistants.  Our program is dying a slow death year by year. But hey we are u. FCS and in the MCFC  as 4K are. I the stands and we are everyone’s homecoming game.  It just pisses me off what could have been and achieved with a different thought process at the top.

I didn’t see the game but we had what 3 turnovers from QB1 and it looks like he couldn’t get ball downfield.  DP knew this day was coming after Davidson’s graduation.  We already see the failure at recruiting in the D with the mass defections and overhaul of what 10 guys. That is a fail in that side of the ball.  Now we see u. Flux still figuring out what we have at QB.  As for PenguinPower saying we will be better but not know it due to our conference. Then that’s a fail too.  He was brought here to get us up the ladder not go back down the ladder.
