In a sick twisted way Narduzzi may have done us favor.  The man exposed just how bad YSU Football is right now.  It was an eye opener for everyone in involved.

This week will tell alot about the program.  If they get embarrassed again it's time for serious changes.

I find all of this hilarious. We had a top 16 team last year with a solid offense and a defense that was good enough to get us to that point until we ran into a better team. All of this coming from a team that Penislini decimated with zero recruiting. We got better each year until all of this portHOLE and NIL money got involved and we lost 9 starters on defense due to 💰 💰 💰. I would love to see what would happen if tressel was coaching with the players he had back in the early 90s and NIL and the portHOLE was around. OSU, MSU, UM, Pitt, Penn state, WV would have picked those players like ripe fruit off a tree for cash. They would not have given two sh**s about winning NCs if someone offered them $500,000. College football died,  it just doesn’t know it yet.

Perfect

Some people might say that Narduzzi holding a 40 year grudge is as odd as some fans still being upset that Kent and Akron didn’t want YSU in the MAC.

That said, those upset that Phillips hugged Narduzzi maybe aren’t aware that that both graduated high school about the same time and are part of a very small and exclusive club. They’ve probably been friends for decades.

Unfortunately style points play into bowls and post season selections. Especially now that the playoff is expanded. And if you don’t want me to score, stop me.

YSU should play Pitt every year. Wish my Nova team would play Temple every year since we recruit the same players.

Narduzzi openly said that in his press conference.  What part about it don't you understand?  They fired him when he had cancer it impacted them financially, and having the ability to get treatment (because you know YSU pays their coaches big $).  He died young and Narduzzi partially blames YSU for his father's inability to get treatment.

Everyone else is experiencing the same challenges.  These excuses don't work for me.  Phillips is a people pleaser.  Who would hug Narduzzi after he made him look so bad?  Does he have any self respect?  He should never have been hired as the head coach.  Moreover STROLLO SHOULD HAVE NEVER EXTENDED HIS CONTRACT.  Where are the details of the EXTENSION?

He's really not a bad coach. That's where everyone is off base.  We don't pay.

Power,

In August, the Youngstown Business Journal investigated NIL and the position of YSU relative to our competition. Here is the link:

https://businessjournaldaily.com/article/penguin-collective-scores-at-raising-money/

This won't last, especially with the collapse of the program. But right now we are above the average for the MVFC and the MAC for that matter.  In 2024, lack of money is NOT the reason for this atrocity.

My job involves statistics and I have a deep understanding of how they're presented.  Bottom line is that they should have used median values because the average is probably skewed by only a few teams
But I get your point.  Understand there's spin in this.  Hate to say it, but the truth.  Thanks for sharing.. you are one of the elites on this board and I respect everything you post.  Just consider what I'm saying

For those that don't understand my point, here's an example.  I live in Richmond Hill GA.  The average salary of a person living her is close to $500k per year.  However, the average is heavily influenced by the fact that the Ford family has a vacation home here (Henry Ford's family).  But them median income is ~$60k.  So the average doesn't represent the actual population.

That's my point and Wick is a sharp guy that gets it.  I'm just stating my point of view

Narduzzi's father was the coach at YSU.. 6 of his ten yeara was spent battling cancer.  He was fired while dealing with cancer.Par was unhappy about it

One has to admire a son's love for his father and when you add that he died of cancer and was fired it makes YSU as the big bad evil and maybe they were.   I left the area in 1981 and Bill Narduzzi was fired almost 40 years ago.  Can someone from that era give some context. The timing sounds terrible but was there justification at the time ?

I was at most of the games his first 6 seasons and 1978 and 79 YSU was a power in D2 and after that his record was average.  Was it the mediocrity that prevailed that got him fired or were there other factors ?

Joe Malmisur was the AD who hire Tressel.  He was the replacement for Narduzzi.  (Aka Duzzer's Bruiser's)

They had recently built the new stadium and decided to go I-AA.  Pit the pieces together

Why did he make it personal this year?Is Phillips the sort of coach you want to make it personal against? Maybe when YSU played him in 2017 and 2018 and lost 45-37 and 28-21 in OT he wasn’t sure Pitt was good enough
to make it “personal.” Imagine him saying that when Pelini was at YSU. Now our program is down and Phillips is a quiet gentleman and confident Pitt will steamroll YSU…so I’m going to step out and say this is “personal.” What a bush league gesture.

Disagree PenguinPower he is far from a good coach. He can’t recruit or get as D1 QB. Without even an average QB we can’t compete   Davidson was a walk on can’t remember if he came with Pelini.
We had the best RB in the country and even though we could see Crenshaw didn’t have it took him way too long to go to Davidson.
Yes we got to the playoffs but we got a break due to FCS rules to get a close team on the draw.
Same team beat us the following year why?
Then Pitt dropped 73 pts in us.  Those kids were not prepared had no fight in them.  Then he hugs the guy Narduzzi I guess it’s think you for the 400k.
Phillips has shown he and his staff cannot evaluate and recruit a division 1 defense period.
Or a D1 QB.  He’s mediocre at best. He’s as D+ version of a Jim Tressel hire.  If YSU can’t afford to compete it’s time to rethink where we are at. To say this 4th rate hire is a great shows how we have lowered our standards.

.

The fact that he played Crenshaw is a coaching critique.  Same with the current QB while the RS that took his team to a state championship sits in the bench.  That part is fair. But he recruited a great class that has been lost to the portal

But , does the school community at large really care about the football team success? Or all sports for that matter.
Do they care enough to invest properly in athletics?

Great point.  The answer is either no, or no one has even thought about it.  I think the latter is just as likely

Not an excuse. We don't have the $$.

That's the problem.  We need people to step up on an annual basis.  It's not all about the facilities anymore.  It's what you can get on a personal level

Read that second one.  I cleaned it up after I read it but couldn't modify. Perhaps a moderator can delete the first post of mine on this thread

Here's my perspective for whatever it's worth.

College football has changed dramatically over the last few years. With NIL and the transfer portal, the gap between FCS and FBS will change and has changed.

We lost a lot of key players to the transfer portal last year, especially on defense.  We have a new DC (my understanding) too.  The defense is a mess as a result.  We also have a limited QB (probably a good kid, but no threat to throw).

Unless we spend a lot of money on the roster, this will continue.  We are a developmental program.  We develop people only to have them transfer.  The game is far different than it was in the 1990's in terms of recruiting.  It's way different today than it was only a few years ago with the NIL and portal.

Youngstown has averaged a loss of 6% of the population every year since the late 1960's.  We no longer have the talent pool to recruit "the state of Youngstown" and remain relevant. Recruiting is a national thing now if you want to be competitive.

We probably should have tried to join an FBS conference years ago when we had the fan base.

I don't know what the answer is except financial resources.  The problem is that things cost a hell of a lot more today due to USD devaluation, and it's impacted every person and corporation.  We need billionaire money to improve the quality of coaching and recruiting.  I can't blame Phillps for all of this.  I can, however, pin some of the stupid mistakes that high school teams make and possibly some personnel decisions on him.  But that's to be expected.

If we want to complete, we are really competing against the transfer portal, NIL, and FCS teams.  To me it's an almost impossible situation to be a coach at our level.  Phillips has always stated that he has a developmental program.  That means since he can't compete for the college ready athlete, he is creative and finds kids that need development.  Some don't have much football experience. But once they're ready and have good film, they're poached.

How many key people did we lose to the portal?  He demonstrated that he can get some great recruiting classes, and my current understanding is that the kids like him.  But the problem is that it's every person for themselves in today's day and age, and they will transfer because the grass appears to be greener on the other side of the fence.  Many have aspirations of NFL careers regardless of the actual probabilities of achievement.

How is this problem solved?

We were outmatched in size, something that Phillips corrected when he came here after Pellini terrible recruiting. I think Phillips is really trying to recruit the size we need, but he doesn't have it, because the kids that are currently playing aren't supposed to be playiing yet. He just cannot fill the holes left from the portal that quickly.  I think his strategy try to get a few kids that are immediate difference makers to anchor a recruiting class. That's to be expected at our level.  We will never be able to recruit to the likes of Ohio State, but most good teams at our level have a few key players.  Many key players left because of the portal.  We have several FBS players that transfered in, but are they going to be good enough to be key players at the FCS level?  Transfers also affect team dynamics when you have such an influx because it can disrupt culture objectives.

Not trying to black pill everyone here, but the issue is a resource problem from my point of view.  The coach has demonstrated he can get the kids, but we need more money to recruit and retain talent. And we need more money to get better coaches that can also be retained.  The administration's goal should be that YSU is a place where you can develop a coaching staff as well as the players.  And just like players, the coach and it's staff should be measured on their ability to leave for biggerFBS power 5 programs once they demonstrate they're a marketable item.  Instead, we have a coach that cannot obtain or retain great coaches and players and it's because we pay under market values. We need more money.       The only strategy that could work is the promise of greener pastures for the coach and it's staff but money is still needed to retain current players.  For coaches, a single contract in power 5 can be life changing.....so out in the work here for less and move on once you become marketable.  Basically what I'm trying to convey is that our coaching staff should be graduating to FBS programs just like NDSU and JMU has been doing.  They are replaced with the next generation that wants to build a staff they can take with them.  Look at the coaches on Tressel's staff when he was here.  Many of them were FBS coaches after going to Ohio State. They came here to perfect their craft and then make it ....and there's a lot of egos in the coaching profession l, chance takers that would take this kind of risk, especially with younger ranks of the coaching fraternity.

Also, I watched Narduzzi's post game press conference.  He told the players this was personal and to win this game for his dad and said that he "tattooed" YSU pretty good and it was as they scripted and his dad is smiling down on the win.  Not that it mattered but he would have hung 100 on us if he could have.

Will we let Phillips go if he doesn't win a game rest of year? We should.    He has no toughness to him...He talks a good game but it doesn't reflect on the field.  What happed to King?  We have no running game, no passing game and no run defense to speak of and it is getting  worse.  I bet next home game stands will be empty.   3 or 4 k attendance.  Our program may have made playoffs last year but no more playoffs as long as we have Phillips.

We have no running game because they stack the box because we cannot pass.

We can't throw the ball, they win pin their ears back and tee off on the running QB.

The DL won't be able to stop them.

Going to be a long day/season

YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Villanova Game Week!!!
« on: August 30, 2024, 11:17:22 PM »
I did not pay to watch the game, so I defer to the opinions of those that did. A big question is: how good is Villanova? Last year they were the 2nd best team in FCS, proving that by going man-to-man with SDSU in Brookings like no other team in the playoffs. If they are a top five team again this season, last evening was disappointing but not terrible.

Two weak opponents at home followed by a good challenge in Pittsburgh. Plenty of opportunity to improve. Let's see who lines up for us at Missouri State, without doubt the most critical game of the season.

Nova has an elite OL.  They also have an excellent defense and their best player on defense was out.  They will be a contender this year.  They have the dudes.

The QB is a liability. He can't see over the line. Reminds me of that small kid at SIU last year. I think Brungard is probably a good leader, but not the elite athlete that the best teams have.

The defense needs to tackle better.  You can tell they're a work in progress.  I think they will get better, but it appears we are missing the kids that left last year in the portal.

Going to be more difficult in today's NIL and transfer portal environment.  Money will fix all of those problems.
